Survey Work Starts on New Highway Sector
J E King of Bowie an engineer with the State Highway Department has begun a survey of location for a six mile sector of unpaved road between Bowie and Newport. The sector includes Clay and Montague counties and bids are to be called within three months. The paved route will form a new trunk line opening Bowie to a shortened southwest route toward Jacksboro Mineral Wells Graham Breckenridge Brownwood and Stephenville.

Firefighters Contain Bowie's Blazes Saving Most Property
Bowie's Volunteer Fire Department answered two alarms this week before ice left streets. They reached both fires quickly saving property with only minor losses. The first call was C N Dickey residence on North Jefferson street where a blow torch heated a pipe under a floor. A fire started from sacks that ignited while pipes were heated. The second alarm was a roof blaze at the Smith Estate on North Mills street with slight damage.

Mrs Walter Coffield a member of a prominent Bowie pioneer family suffered a stroke on Tuesday and was later reported in critical condition at Bowie Clinic Hospital. She collapsed in her yard while tending chickens and was helped to the house by Mrs Lindsey. She has long been active in clubs churches and civic work in Bowie.
