A clipped local item notes handwritten corrections to a prior notice about Bowie and Nocona pastors exchanging positions for last Sunday. Rev. L. V. Reazin is the focal pastor. changes involve editorial errors and a misnamed property bottleneck at the Latham site.
Foster Robinson plans 15 acre subdivision southeast of Bowie with 22 initial lots sized 100 by 150 feet and deed restrictions prohibiting livestock and poultry. A three acre park will greet entrants as street grading begins and a three bedroom house starts sale. Jones Robinson also to build.
Parker's Food Store opened Saturday after a full remodel closing Thursday and Friday. New gondola shelving, chrome trim fixtures, and a 30-foot Friedrich Floating Air counter and a self serving freezer display dominate the layout. The staff includes Clarence Newsom as manager and a full team of department heads, checkers, and stock clerks.
Land owners in the Bowie area have contracted with Coty Slaughter of Wichita Falls to remove upland oak and other timber from about 1500 acres. Slaughter uses three bulldozers to clear and pull trees, charging 3.50 to 5 per acre plus 40 per acre to clear, grub and prepare land. Roy Sanders Sr has arranged for the work, with PMA paying up to 200 per farm at 3 per acre.
The Montague County 4-H and FFA livestock show is set for April 23 in Bowie. The date was chosen by county vocational agriculture teachers, with about 160 exhibitors and 300 entries expected. A planning meeting for business and civic leaders will be held February 10 at 7 30 p m at the county agent’s office in Montague.
Mrs. Howard Dodson and Mrs. Herman Moore attended the Dallas Market the first of last week. Mrs. Irene Wells visited in Electra last Friday.
The Nocona Indians edged the Rabbits 56 to 49 on January 28 to clinch the conference title outright. Bennie Carver and Horace Thompson led Bowie with 15 points each as Bowie struggled to finish around the basket. A return game with Nocona is set for February 15 in Bowie.
Bowie Cottontails defeated Nocona Pa ppooses 31 to 23 in a spirited curtain-raiser. James Thompson led Bowie with 15 points as Bowie holds an unblemished district record and sits atop the standings.
Friday night Bowie Cottontails Bowie Girls and Bowie Jackrabbits play in Decatur starting at 6. On Tuesday February 8 Jacksboro visits Bowie for three games all at 6 in the Bowie gym with the Cottontails starting the fireworks.
The Bowie girls basketball team defeated Nocona 71 to 46 on Friday night. A total of 68 fouls were called, possibly a district record, with several Nocona players benched and two Bowie players fouling out late. Carol Ann Smith led Bowie with 45 points while Sue Jackson added 14. Bowie remains first in the conference standings and undefeated in district play.
In Bowie gym on Saturday night the Bowie A and B squads faced Irving. Bowie B won 54 to 40 led by Robicheaux with 16, Winn 12, Cooper 10. Bowie A beat Irving 63 to 53 led by Monroe and Roach with 18 each, Thompson 13. Rabbits rallied from a slow start to finish strong.
Bowie Cottontails overwhelmed Olney juniors 34 to 13 as James Thompson poured in 24 points. Gary Liggett added three baskets in a lopsided win continuing on page 3.
Bert Cassle receives contract to build Magnolia filling station at the corner opposite First National Bank. Mrs. Paul Donald and sister Susette Meyer of Austin will construct and lease to Magnolia. Station 25 by 44 feet faces North Mason Highway 59 with 90 feet frontage. work to begin at once.
John Q. Cox faces trial next Monday in Montague district court for the murder of Clyde Bryson. Prosecutors plan to present evidence and witnesses in the case.
JoAlan Spears buys Gary Nees lumber yard frontage on West Wise and will erect a Sinclair filling station at the corner. Gary-Nees moves lumber yard to Lyon Matthews site, with a large remodel of Lyon-Matthews and Gary-Nees offices. Construction likely three months away.
City authorities in Bowie file condemnation actions to acquire 142 acres for a new lake site. Judge Mays names three commissioners J K Brite Marvin Shaw and Hardy Seay to set hearing date and determine sale price with appeals possible to the court. Burns Brown Motor Company formed by Burns and Brown to take over Mercury Lincoln agency with plans for a big opening and Lincoln display within 30 days.
William Randel 55, of Wichita Falls, died at 5 30 pm Tuesday after a two vehicle wreck five miles from Bowie on Monday afternoon. Also injured were Lula Hall of Henrietta and granddaughter Marada Watkins. they remain in Bowie hospital. Charles Finnegan of Dallas, the other driver, says the Negro driver swerved to avoid him, causing a multi car rollover into a field. Police report no further details.
State Conference Judge Howard Mays will attend the annual law enforcement conference in Austin on February 7 and 8. The event is hosted by the Attorney General for county judges, county prosecutors, and peace officers.
In Montague County twelve new oil locations were staked during the past week. Montague County produced 24 611 barrels of oil last week, slight drop from the prior week, with 67 wildcat wells and 195 field locations listed for the year 1954.
The Roach addition on North Mill Street offers 25 platted home lots with water and sewer access. Two new streets bound the tract at Mill Jackson Gray, and five parcels have sold to R. M. McPherson Roy Overstreet Gordon Thomas Mrs Lois Roland and Mrs Leon Reed, with several more under consideration.
Barbara Tarpley age 15 of Bowie and her sister Mrs Sherman Jackson age 19 of Jacksboro were hurt Saturday afternoon when a Fort Worth and Denver freight train struck their 1946 Ford at Clay Street. Barbara suffered a shoulder fracture and Mrs Jackson bruises from which the younger remained in Bowie Hospital and the elder was released after several days.
The county emergency feed program ends Tuesday February 15 as PMA official Buell Wright reports. Applications received through February 15 will be processed.
