Report from a Texas press association gathering in Austin includes details on the Trout Turtle printing device, European tour impressions from editors, and Governor Shivers and state lawmakers preparing for a special session. Also notes local connections and early tax proposals in Texas.
One of Bowie’s biggest oil finds in over a year, a new field near Sunset in Falls and Wise counties, shows a deep Viola pay at 7036 feet in the Williamson No 1 well. Initial tests yield 225 000 cubic feet gas daily and 5 barrels per hour oil, with cementing planned to extend drilling. The Coulson discovery six miles east of Bowie also marks a distinct new field on a 133 ½ acre tract as production continues.
The Texan Theatre in Bowie will reopen next week showing Forbidden Adventure on February 9 10 and 11. Manager Charles Gower states the opening does not affect other shows and regular Texan schedules will be announced later. Admission is 50 and 25 cents tax included. The Texan has been remodeled and repainted recently.
Uncompleted Montague County poll tax records through Tuesday night estimate around 3,500 receipts issued, well below past years such as 1948 with 4,214 and 1946 with 3,314. Comparisons show a lower turnout potential this election, despite 800 plus receipts at Bowie collector’s office this year.
School officials and doctors said there were no signs of scarlet fever in Bowie this week. The girl previously reported to have scarlet fever is back in school, well and happy. The examining doctor, who earlier believed she had scarlet fever, has changed his opinion, according to the East Ward school principal.
Bowie nears its March of Dimes goal as fund collections approach the $1200 quota. The Roosevelt Birthday square dance, postponed by icy weather, will be held under the Lariat Club. Mrs June Underwood BPW chair and Dr C J Dodsworth county vice chair praise the strong community response.
State Highway Department minutes reveal two seal coat jobs planned in Montague County. Work includes 2.3 miles on State Highway 114 from Sunset to the Wise county line costing 2200 dollars and 9.2 miles on a farm to market road from Nocona north costing 10000 dollars.
Mr and Mrs E F Bartlett of Wellington spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs J W Clark and their daughter Teddie Marie. All attended the Fat Stock Show at Fort Worth.
County auditor C C Benton reports total county debt as of December 31 1949 at 268 437 42 after adjustments for state aid issues sinking funds and short term loans. Cash balances listed include July 10 721 10 permanent improvement 13 133 30 salary 23 269 75 general 54 863 83 road and bridge districts 1 2 3 4 and right of way fund 9 015 65.
The Lions Club reports a very successful membership contest between the Reds and the Blues. The Reds won and the Blues must provide a club feed. New members joined and attendance improved noticeably.
Irby Construction Company moves fifteen men and equipment to Bowie to build 230 miles of rural electric lines for Wise REA. Work starts immediately from Stoneburg across central and eastern communities serving Stoneburg Montague Mallard Forestburg and into Wise county reaching Decatur. About 400 farm families will gain new electrical service.
Garrett & Company announces a three day free trial of their improved television sets in Bowie trade area. The ad states the trial demonstrates clear entertaining pictures and sound, with installations recently added in Bowie Bellevue Park Springs and Salona to showcase the new machine.
J D White of Bowie now at Rice Institute attracted strong publicity when his photograph appeared on the front cover of Southern Coach and Athlete magazine in Atlanta Georgia. White, son of Mr and Mrs J D White Sr, graduated Bowie High in 1947 and earned a scholarship to Rice where he has an outstanding scholastic record and is among the top ten athletes in the Southwest Conference as a basketball star.
A condensed listing shows film titles and dates across February at the Majestic. Highlights include Kazan and The Blazing Trail on Feb 3 4, Red Hot and Blue on Feb 5 6, C Man on Feb 7, Not Wanted on Feb 8 9, Brute Force on Feb 9 11, Slave Girl on Feb 5 6, and Forbidden Adventure on Feb 9 10 11.
Miss Jeannine Lee of Fort Worth spent a weekend visiting Mr. and Mrs. Samuel E. Hyatt at their home.
National Boy Scout Week activities run February 6 through 13 with Troops 116 and 117 hosting a Court of Honor and a Blue and Gold Banquet at Lions Club Hall. Leaders include Joe Tarver and George Wright with volunteer committees. Cub Week events feature the Crusade theme and a 60 cent dinner by First Presbyterian Church helpers.
A major ice storm slowed Bowie area traffic with about three inches of sleet and glassy roads. Snow plows and city crews cleared streets as Mayor Major led efforts to create clear lanes. Livestock stayed healthier than in recent years, easing farmer worries about the coming crop season.
The Bowie Real Estate Exchange, owned by Howard Wheeler and Fred L. Raporn Sr., with offices at Raborn Motor Company, offers full real estate services including sale of business and residential property, farms and ranches, rentals, oil royalties, and leases. They will also consider building homes on buyer’s lot or from the company’s list. Wheeler and Raborn are prominent local figures with extensive experience in housing and land developments.
Continental Oil Company reports a discovery well three miles south of Henrietta named Alliance Trust No. 1. The test produced gas in six minutes and oil flow in 43 minutes, with bottom hole pressure of 2400 pounds. The well sits on 160 acres in Orange County School Land Survey, with three offsets planned.
Mr and Mrs Jack Lovette of Texas University Austin visited here over the weekend retaining ties to the campus.
The Henderson Drilling Company of Longview Texas moves a crew of fifteen men into Bowie to drill at least two wells in the area. A L Berwick leads operations in Salona on 1% acres of the Lamb Estate for John Wrather of Kilgore, an offset to a Richardson producer at Salona.
J. H. Holaway 78 was found dead Friday January 27 in his Salona yard by J. H. Williams of Magnolia Company. An inquest ruled death an accidental gunshot wound. he kept a gun for woodpeckers. He lived in Montgomery County 35 years, born in Alabama, ran a Salona general store. Funeral January 28 at Burgess Chapel. interment Salona Cemetery. Survived by two stepsons M. S. Wells and J. W. Wells and five nieces. Pallbearers named.
Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Baker were business visitors in eastern Oklahoma Friday, touring local firms and meeting area executives.
