A Bowie dog poisoned last week, local residents donate church pianos, and Elton Winton starts a new job as Tax Assessor. A new Decatur building for an Athens glass firm echoes relocation talks to Bowie. Site Three in Morocco features in Stars and Stripes with remote desert life, while Bowie thanks readers for 1956 support and celebrates New Year.
Judge Roy Bean's court in Bowie hosted the Lions club as they escort the "offenders" to the old judge. Sixty-five boxes for needy families were prepared with an average value of about $20 each, totaling 1315.34 dollars for a single day, a record.
Donations to a Red Cross Hungary relief fund remain accepted across Montague County. Mrs. L. J. Ivy notes local chapter efforts with food and clothing distributed by the International Committee. A five dollar gift aids refugees, diapers, vitamins, antitoxin, and penicillin. ninety five dollars funds warm clothes, sweets, compresses, a blanket, and evaporated milk for Hungarian children. A Christmas Eve fire destroyed the five room farm home of Mr and Mrs Earl Jones three miles from Bowie. The family was at the grandparents home when neighbors called the fire department at 6 30 PM. The house burned beyond saving with only a few burned items saved and no clothing. The Joneses and their three children are staying with Mrs J W Fuller in Montague.
Oil production in Montague County last week averaged 20 670 barrels daily with higher activity nearby. Wildcat No 01 Mollie Mansfield was staked six miles south of Bowie reaching 6300 feet while James B Zetzsche No 1 near Bowie seeks backpressure cement for Caddo production at 6100 feet. Continuous development planned by Grace Production and others with several completions, including No 1 C J Brannan and Nos A-51 N J Howard ABC and A-52 in the Montague County Regular field.
The Emergency Feed and Grain program in Montague County extends to February 15, 1957. The Emergency Roughage program also extends, with roughage applications delayed until January as funds are settled in Washington.
Mrs. Louis Sharp, former Montague County resident, was awarded 36441 dollars in Fort Worth's 17th District Court for leg injuries from a November 12 1955 collision near Azle Texas. Her mother Mrs. R L Norton of Bridgeport received 12800 for injuries suffered. Gulf Insurance Company defended the case for Mrs Sterling Foster. Peery and Wilson of Wichita Falls represented plaintiffs.

In the Montague Regular field nine miles north of Nocona Walsh and Watts No 12 Hynds D completed at total depth 1004 ft producing 18 barrels of oil per day with gravity 26 and gas to oil ratio 500 1. The well sits on a 32 acre lease with gravity 26 and GOR 500 1.
A large Bowie crowd gathered near the Overstreet building for the Shop-Arama drawing hosted by Bowie Jaycees. Top winners included E. F. Bradfield for a deep freeze unit and Dewey Dorman for a 12 HP outboard motor, with multiple others receiving TVs, washers, bedroom suites, and gift certificates.
Judge Howard Mays of Montague County has been named assistant attorney general of Texas by Attorney-elect Will Wilson to head the bond division in Austin. He will move his family from the Saint Jo area to the capital. residency begins January 2 with the family joining him mid January. If he resigns as county judge, commissioner Howard Middleton will handle the vacancy process. Marvin London is among attorneys favored to fill the spot. Mays, 43, has served as county judge since 1951 and was elected president of the Texas County Judges and Commissioners Assoc in November.
McKinney meets Bowie in boys A and B games Friday night at Bowie High School gym. Graham visits Bowie Saturday night as another strong matchup. Fresh boys play in Fort Worth Christmas tournament this week. girls teams sit out holiday period.
Montague county farmers now have 12500 available for 1957 Conservation Reserve Soil Bank contracts. Payments and cost shares will be issued on a first come, first served basis while funds last, ASC office manager Buel E. Wright said. Contact the ASC office for details.
Several accidents were reported in Bowie last week due to heavy fog. Most collisions happened at street intersections. Damages included 300 on a 1951 Ford driven by Leon Tuenge and a 1953 Chevrolet driven by G A Quisenberry, 250 for Melvin Williams and an unidentified Wichita Falls man, 200 for Charlie Wells, and 300 after a Monday crash at Pecan and Smythe where Nelson Bell hit Loyd Mershon in a 1956 Pontiac from San Diego.
J C Wright interior communications electrician third class USN son of Mr and Mrs H A Wright of Bowie sails for the Far East aboard the Navy cruiser Bremerton after a 10 day stop in Melbourne Australia during the Olympic Games.
Joe Monroe of Southwestern Bell moves from Graham to Fort Worth after a promotion. He and wife Betty Jo Robinson Monroe and their sons Steve and Tim have relocated, visiting relatives Winnie Bell Robertson and Will Langford in their old hometown. Monroe previously worked in Bowie.
Elton Winton of Bowie will assume the county tax assessor and collector post on January 1 as Watt Self declines re election. Other local offices change hands include B J Wood succeeding George Shackelford as precinct three county commissioner, and Tom Lindsey reelected as sheriff. The Bowie Jackrabbits lost to Lawton Oklahoma 45 to 42 in the Lawton tournament final, after earlier beating Duncan 54 to 45. Wade Dyer and James Thompson led with 14 points apiece in the Duncan win, while in the Lawton game Dyer 4 Thompson 13 Carver 14 and Robicheaux 2 fueled the offense. The Lawton victory came as the final seconds ticked away with Lawton ahead by one point.
Congratulations flow this week as families share newborns. Edna Ayliffe, weighing 9 lbs 15 oz, joins the Latchem family of Lafayette born December 22 to Mr. and Mrs Charles Latchem. David Lawrence is welcomed by the Hunt family Dec 20 in Decatur. Debbie Lynn arrives for the Davis family in Bowie on December 23. Melvin Dale Stoner, born December 26 in Bowie, weighs 8 lbs 15 oz with grandparents Mrs Hugh Stoner, Mr and Mrs Joe Hunt.
A long list of patients admitted to and discharged from area hospitals includes Mrs. Lois Woolsey Miss L Faucett and Matt Lyons all of Bowie, with additional admissions from Vashti Forestburg Saint Jo Bellevue and surrounding towns. Discharges include Mrs. E W Daley Mrs. Dick Clark and infant Debbie Lynn among others, with repeated mentions of specific families and towns in the Bowie region.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Brinkley are the parents of a son born Saturday December 22 at Bowie hospital. He weighs eight pounds and is named Tim Brian. Grandmother is Mrs. H. I. McAfee of Bowie and great grandfather A. M. Barnhart of Graham. Tim has two older brothers Dan Hugh and Ben Paul.
