The superintendent Walter B. Alexander says Jeannine Lee Bryan’s name was omitted from last week’s Honor Roll. Jeannine is a regular honoree and among the school’s top students, and the error will be corrected.
The State Highway Commission on December 17 ordered surfacing work on Highway 59 from Bowie northeast for six miles at an estimated cost of 5 600 dollars. Funding comes from state reserves set aside during wartime. The broader plan aims to modernize 1 456 miles of roads with projects totaling 6 330 500 dollars across Texas in Spring and Summer 1948.
Johnson Poultry Ranch will begin the hatching season with 25 000 baby chicks on January 1. The yearly total is expected to exceed one million chicks shipped worldwide in 1948. The operation features the famed white leghorn with high record pedigrees and has undergone major plant improvements including new buildings.

Donna Kay Burris infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Burris was buried at Sunset Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. officiated by T. Hamilton of the Bowie Church of Christ. Interment followed at Sunset Cemetery under Owens & Brumley Funeral Home. Survived by parents three sisters Wanda Ruth Norma June and Carolyn Sue of Sunset and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Kuykendall of Alvord and Charlie Burris of Sunset.
The First Methodist Church Primary Department hosted a Christmas program for mothers and friends. Children sang carols, read scripture, and presented a Christmas story, with readings by Betty and Iona Andreasen, Freddie Howard, Mary Beth Frerking, Mary Zetsche, Patsy High, Sue Precise, and others. Gifts for the Methodist Home were placed at the manger and the event closed with prayers and carols.
A new wildcat well four miles west of Bowie began Tuesday producing oil estimated at 100 to 150 barrels per hour. The well tapped 29 feet of saturated sand in the upper conglomerate, with eight perforated feet yielding the flow. Depth reached 6468 feet on an 800 acre Benson ranch. Nearby activity includes Manning No 1 near Chico and Sinclair Minor No 1 near Montague with other Continental and Pem wells reporting drilling progress.
Milton Filmore Wilson born June 4 1855 in Adamsville Tennessee died after a weeks illness in Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. Funeral services were held at Owens Brumley Bowie with Rev Ben Baits officiating. Interment Salona cemetery beside his wife. Survived by son D T Wilson Bowie daughter Mrs M R Farris Fort Worth sister Mrs Betty Farris brother C L Wilson Adamsville Tenn and 17 grandchildren 11 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Donna Cupples and Mrs. D Calaway were visitors in Fort Worth on Sunday, spending time in the city and calling on local friends.
The State Highway Department announces bids for a seven mile paving project from Bowie to the Clay county line. The contract is to be let January 15 and runs along the new road right of way north of Newport. The route begins at the Denver Railway Station near Mason Street and the post office.
T. P. and Thomas Evans of the Evans Motor Company attended a preview of Ford's 1948 truck line in Fort Worth on December 18. J. D. Ball called the event Ford's most important truck meeting, noting postwar models with three engines and a wide range of capacities. Evans said public showings would start January 16.
Among those from out of town attending funeral services here Tuesday for Milton Filmore Wilson were Mr and Mrs George E Wright and son Eddie Mr and Mrs Talmage Wilson and children Mr and Mrs Charles Wilson and children Mr and Mrs Weldon Farris Mr and Mrs Clayton Childress all of Fort Worth.
Mr and Mrs Stewart Watson and their son Steve visit his parents from Austin where he works with the State land office He has recently passed the State bar exam and is now a licensed attorney
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sandlin of Fort Worth announce the birth of their daughter Patsy Lou on December 3, weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Woody Arnold of Bowie and Mr. and Mrs. William P. Sandlin of Fort Worth. Mrs. Sandlin's maiden name is Oleta Arnold.
Mrs. C. E. Hill is a member of the newly organized Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra and will play second violin. The Hills attended a Monday rehearsal and party for the group, reflecting their active involvement in local music circles.
Annapolis Naval Academy midshipman David Latham is home for the holidays with his mother Mrs Homer B Latham in attendance at the family gathering during the break from training.
Mr and Mrs C H Burke and their son James Allen of College Station are visiting relatives this week.
The Neon American Oil Company opens an office in Bowie occupying former Nu-Enamel Oil space above Morris Coffee Shop in the Wood buildings. It holds properties in Bowie area oil fields and plans a drilling program.
Farmers elected the Montague County Agricultural Conservation Committee on December 16 to direct the 1948 program. Milton R. Barlow chairs with Henry A. Reynolds as vice chair and other members named. The committee will issue about forty thousand dollars in prior approvals for Soil Conservation practices, covering reimbursements or materials and services for approved practices, with a list of approved practices and farm limits to be set before January 1, 1948.
G B Purcell announced the Texas Employment Commission will handle farm worker placements in Wichita Falls area after January 1 1948. He urged farmer and worker cooperation and said a representative will be in Bowie City Auditorium each Thursday from 9:00 a m to 1:00 p m to assist in hiring and placement. The office at 723 Tenth Street Wichita Falls will coordinate requests and supply forecasts each season.
