Phenylketonuria PKU screening champions Texas children
The PKU screening program by the State Health Department aims to find one in 15 000 newborns with phenylketonuria. Early blood testing after 24 hours of feeding, followed by a low phenylalanine diet, prevents mental retardation and reduces state costs from institutional care.
