Montague county fire destroyed the town’s only barber shop and equipment. The incident followed reports of oil development in Wise county and a pipeline plan slated to start April 1.
Santa Claus will arrive Thursday afternoon December 13 in Bowie at 3 pm at the Christmas tree on Tarrant and Smythe streets. The Jaycees will use the public address system for carols as crowds gather. The Chamber of Commerce and Jaycees arranged the visit and completed new Christmas decorations spanning hundreds of feet.
Alex Griffin was elected Bowie's fire chief at Monday night’s fire department officers meeting. Also chosen were Ellis Butler as 1st assistant chief Doyle Richardson as 2nd assistant chief Howard Middleton as president and Bobby Bird as secretary. The session occurred in the fire station club room.
Glen Sutherland, Montague County Attorney, has resigned and moved to El Paso to join Loomis Kirkland and Sutherland. The firm will be Loomis Kirkland and Sutherland. Mrs Sutherland left Southwestern Bell. The county court accepted the resignation. Fitts will take office after a one month gap. no interim appointment made. The Sutherlands reside at 3907 Clifton St El Paso.
J C Porter will be master of ceremonies for the third annual awards barbecue at Montague school on Tuesday evening next week December 11 inviting the public to attend the event.
Montague county residents are invited to a Tuesday night gathering at Montague school with a casual, informal barbecue. Tickets cost two dollars and must be secured by Sunday as caterers need headcount by Monday. Tickets available from agricultural workers, County Commissioner, and named local contacts Howard Middleton Bowie Jeff Henderson Nocona and H D Fields Saint Jo. Gan Gan Gan, Regan Brown, a noted agricultural worker from Texas A M will speak after the barbecue.
Gas lines extended to Bowie Heights and Brinkley Addition. Lone Star Gas Co says about 2144 miles of lines replaced in Bowie this year with four inch lines replacing two inch and smaller. The improvement plan aims to similar replacement in 1957 per district manager John Inman.
A blaze in Montague destroyed the Shockley barber shop and two adjoining empty structures on the court house square late Sunday afternoon. Two neighboring buildings, the grocery and Buddy Carter’s restaurant, were spared though damaged. Fire chiefs cited defective wiring as the likely cause and crews from Bowie Saint Jo and Nocona battled the fire, preventing spread to the restaurant.
Mr and Mrs C L Hickey drove to Oklahoma City Tuesday afternoon to attend the Oklahoma State Poultry show and returned Wednesday evening. Capt L C Hamm of Columbus Indiana visited earlier in the week with his mother Mrs Gertrude Ham and accompanied his wife and children home after their stay here.

City of Bowie reports its third oil producer at the 285 acre site of the old city lake. Official tests show 243.90 barrels per day of 40.1 gravity crude. No. 3, staked Oct 15 in Montague County near Stoneburg, completed through 6116-30 feet with 1750 psi tubing and 909 to 1 gas oil ratio.
L. O. Miller treasurer reports the Boy Scout drive collected 410 dollars up to Wednesday December 5. Community members hope a new scouting troop will be organized locally soon.
The Montague County Hereford Association promotes its fourth annual sale in the new Pelham Park sale barn Friday starting at 1 PM with Walter S. Britten as auctioneer and Bill Mitchell of the Keith Hereford ranch judging the sale order. Forty bulls and four females are consigned from multiple ranches including Hull Dobbs Ft Worth and L C Atkinson Throckmorton Bowie consignors.
Mrs. Carl Shurtleff and Mrs. Emmett Thorne were guests at a Saturday banquet hosted by a local company at the Kemp Hotel in Wichita Falls. Shurtleff represents the company and Thorne won one of several prizes handed out during the event.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Robertson of Henrietta on the birth of a daughter Sandra Lynn at Bowie hospital on December 4 weighing 9 pounds 3 ounces. John Michael born December 5 to Mr. and Mrs. J L Stockton of Bowie weighs 7 pounds 11 ounces. Grandparents named J W Miller of Bowie and Karen Sue listed with weights 8 pounds 2 ounces.
Montague County Red Cross seeks donations totaling 332 dollars to aid Hungarian relief. American Red Cross plans to run one of ten Austrian refugee camps housing over 3 000 people, while the League of Red Cross Societies oversees 20 000 refugees in ten camps. A baby-born in Dallas at Methodist Hospital on Wednesday November 28 to Mr and Mrs A J Corrick. Mrs Corrick is Carrie Denton of Bowie. Maternal grandmother is Mrs Cleta Denton of Bowie.
