Clarence Grigg A Leader In Zone 5 Conservation Efforts
Clarence Grigg, 1953 Conservation Farmer of Zone 5, champions soil conservation. He shifted 140 cultivated acres to permanent pasture in 1961, with 130 acres of common Bermuda, 150 Coastal Bermuda and 15 acres of fescue. He cleared timber, built two ponds stocked with fish, and aims for a 150 head Angus herd as grass grows. He applies 200 pounds of 16-200 fertilizer per acre in spring, adds ammonium nitrate as moisture allows, installed waterways and terraces, works grain and alfalfa rotations, and sodded 40 acres to Coastal Bermuda using his own two-row sod machine.
