A note urges more storefront decorations in downtown Bowie area as Santa nears. F S. T. Smith recalls watching a large deer in the Leona vicinity while avoiding a gun. L. T. Hunter speaks on soil conservation in Bridgeport with a Bible borrowing gag.
Work advances on a modern six room ranch home for Floyd Scroggins located four miles north of Bowie. Contractors Bob Latham and Russell Lacy oversee the build with Lyon Matthews Lumber Co of Bowie supplying materials.
An attractive modern residence is being built on East Wise Street for Mac Winn who recently sold his Sunset home. The five room house with attached garage is constructed by Bowie contractor C L Craft and materials are furnished by Gary Nees Lumber Company of Bowie.
Sheriff J L Jameson of Montague County issues a warning to individuals who dump garbage on county or state road rights of way. The notice cites a stiff penalty under state law to prevent disease spread and road unsightliness, with lawmen pledging strict enforcement.
The charred body of 45 year old Chester E. Wauford was found in his burned Bowie area home after neighbors saw smoke rising. An oil stove is suspected to have caused the blaze. Funeral services were held at 2 30 p m Wednesday at Fundamental Baptist Church in Bowie with burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Survivors include siblings, a grandmother and several aunts and uncles. Pallbearers listed.
Work is under way on a five room modern home for Bob Lancaster on Belcherville Road. Builder N B Hamilton of Bowie is overseeing the erection with materials from Lyon Matthews.
Roy C. Winn of Atlanta Texas was charged this week at Montague with burning an insured automobile after motor trouble on the road between Nocona and St Jo. Officers said he has confessed to the charge.
Howard Wheeler county commissioner says contracts will be let January 15 for highway paving in Bowie area. Projects include Sunset to Chico, Bowie to Clay county line, and Bowie to New Port as part of the new BowieJacksboro link. Road work already underway includes right of way clearing fencing and graveling six miles plus Belcherville road gravelling.
The Garrett family gathered Thursday November 25 at Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Garrett home for their tenth annual reunion. The event featured a noon meal and a prayer by Raymond Garrett. Attending were numerous relatives from Gainesville Denton Fort Worth and other areas including J R Garrett Henry Garrett Paul Garrett and M D Garrett along with Miss Cherry Walker as a guest.
L P Mason of Salona, with his own sorghum mill, sells nearly all output to Bowie Grocery at 2.35 dollars per gallon. His wife samples and determines color and cooking time for the product. The Bowie News printed his bucket labels and a West Texas visitor bought several gallons.
Charles Salter a 13 year old boy was found hanging but was cut down just in time on the porch of his aunt Mrs Julia Defoor in Bowie A rope tied to a box caused the loop around his neck He was resuscitated at Bowie Hospital and saved from tragedy by timely intervention
A multi-vehicle crash six miles west of Bowie on the Wichita Falls highway killed four members of the Welch family and injured several others. Oran B. Brown faces murder charges alleging intoxication. his brother Travis Brown pled guilty to drunkenness.
Oil exploration centers on the Manning No 1 wildcat by Cities Service in Wise county amid ongoing trading from Sunset to Strawn. Drilling progresses at Ellenberger and Benson No 1 near Powie while Continental reports a 102 barrel test at Atkins No 1 in Lewis pool near Bowie. Significant finds spark interest in Stoneburg as Harry Walker No 1 shows oil in Strawn strata with a Monday test of ten stands.
Mr and Mrs J O Jones purchase Star Courts on East Wise street from Jake Hoefner. The $35000 deal includes some exchanged property and Hoefner moves to Bonham. Hallie Collins of Bowie arranged the sale. The 20 unit modern court plans improvements and aims to serve traveling and permanent tenants.
Mrs. Donald Mann and her young son Joel returned from Austin Monday. They are joined at the Mann home by Mrs. Jack Willis and her daughters Theo and Trudie and a guest Wayne Rogers.
Bowie citizens and football fans traveled by bus to Fort Worth for the bi district game with Diamond Hill Fort Worth champions. Five Bowie players earned All-District mythical eleven honors from district 13 A coaches selecting by votes.
Texas peanut growers are urged to vote on marketing quotas for 1948 49 and 50 on December 9. Howard T. Kingsbery of the Production and Marketing Administration asks all eligible growers to ballot. Voting sites include Bowie Sunset Montague Forestburg Saint Jo with 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. hours.
George Tuttle visited his parents in Longview during the Thanksgiving holidays, pausing from his usual duties to share time with family and give thanks.
Funeral services were held at Owens & Brumley Chapel for Charlie S. McDowell who died November 21 in Jena Louisiana after a four day illness. Rev. C. S. Wilhite officiated with interment in Elmwood Cemetery. Survivors include five daughters and one son.
Harry Walker Theodore Precise Mrs Lera Phillips Miss Thelma Pigg and Marvin Precise attended a dinner and meeting of the Lone Star Gas Company employees in Fort Worth last Tuesday night.
