L. K. Kaiser and Jack Ryan hunted in the Palo Pinto mountains on Thanksgiving morning. Kaiser brought down a four point buck weighing about 150 pounds at 150 yards. This marked his first deer and he received warm congratulations from friends on his marksmanship.
Bowie and Montague County singers travel to Ante lope for the Clay Jack County Singing Convention held December 5. A Saturday night gospel program features solos duets and quartets by top talent from both counties with a notable Sunday lineup led by S P Wall and Charlie Gear.
The Bowie Lions Club brings a notable wrestling night to City Auditorium next Tuesday December Sth. Semi finals feature Kay West vs Helaine King and a main event pitting Jimmie Murphy against Eddie O'Shea. Local preliminaries accompany the card with net proceeds aiding the Boy Scouts fund. Admission: 85 cents men 25 cents women 15 cents children.
Bowie basketball and volleyball squads host Alvord at 7 tonight in the season opener. The boys play basketball and the girls volleyball as a crowd is expected to boost the teams. Guests Mr and Mrs Linnie Southard and their daughter Dorothy of Electra visited Bowie relatives for Thanksgiving.
Miss Aileen Burgess and Bob Burgess were Saturday visitors at the Texas Centennial in Dallas. Dr. and Mrs IL Funchess visited over the last week in Altus Oklahoma with relatives and friends.
In 1908 Bowie saw its first auto repair shop start with few cars. J T Wetzel opened, followed by Price Chandler who ran a garage and Ford Agency. The photo shows a Pathfinder, a Studebaker, and a Buick linked to local residents including Arthur Ayres, Lee Faulkner, Frank Karr, and Jim Hahn with Chandler and Karr among the figures.
Mrs. Lucy Caroline Weatherford, Montague county pioneer born November 23 1852 in Wayne County Tennessee, marked her 84th birthday at her granddaughter’s home near Queen's Peak. Surviving are two sons John Weatherford and Elisha Weatherford, 17 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. The gathering recalls the Butterfield Route era and Bowie's 1881 town formation.
A Bowie Lions Club charity tree event aims to bring Christmas cheer to underprivileged youths. Donations of coins and small gifts are encouraged to support a tree lighting at the City Auditorium on December 28. Committee members and contact points are listed for gifts boys and girls, decorations, programs, and notifications.
Mrs. 8S. E. Adams of Robert Lee Texas was injured when her car overturned on the Montague Highway Wednesday. Driver Mr. Adams attempted to pull out of deep ruts and skidded on wet gravel. Mrs. Adams endured a severe lip laceration and facial injuries. The son had minor scratches and Mr. Adams was unharmed. Albert Bacher transported them to Bowie Clinic Hospital.
Bowie merchants bring holiday spirit by decorating store interiors and storefronts. Colored lights strung across the business district cast a multicolored glow, with Christmas lighting arranged by a Rotary Club committee led by Dr. J. Dodsworth.
The county committee and community completed cotton peanut and general crop base adjustments in November. Adjustments were sent to and approved by the State Board as equitable, with Montague County being the 18th Texas county approved. Growers must sign payment applications at scheduled meetings or at the county agent’s office after the last date.
Scout Master Henry M. Moore led a troop at Daube Ranch for a possum hunt after a wiener roast with cocoa coffee and doughnuts. Helpers Kenneth Reddy Robert Wilson George Cline and sponsors Henry T Ayres M Posey David Warren and Harry H Dreyfuss accompanied the group on a 90 minute excursion ending with a large campfire and hike through the countryside.
Miss Mabel Mitchell was called as pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and began last Sunday. She will preach each Sunday morning and evening with Holy Woman’s Society meetings, Sunday school at 9 45, and midweek prayer and missionary activities. Mitchell is a Bowie native and Bethel College attendee with many local friends cheering her ministry.
Mrs A C Irby and baby Kenneth Craft returned home after two weeks in Bowie Clinic Hospital. Leon Fox seeks to return home this week for a fractured leg. C N Powell of Henrietta admitted for medical treatment and improving. R W Ridinger Bowie underwent major operation and is improving. G M Evans near Bowie had a major operation. L F Kimbrough much improved. Joe Fulcher admitted for emergency appendix operation and convalescing. J W Pierce Bowie to return home after pneumonia. Bobby Wayne Nichols near Bowie to return home after automobile accident with facial fracture. J Melvin Tucker Hillsboro admitted for tonsillectomy.
