Black-topping of the Rockhill road began this morning to connect the North Mill-East Wise highway corner with the lake site. The rebuilt farm-to-market road will improve access to the dam area and attract visitors, though completion will be brief.
Construction proceeds on the Bible Baptist church in Fruitland with plans for a large auditorium and four classrooms. Rev. C L Wells of Bowie resigns Pleasant Ridge Baptist to become pastor. M D Wall is contractor. Nearby, multiple homes are under new construction by various owners and contractors on Nelson, Skyline Drive, N Mill, and Coffield streets.
Thomas Newsom visits his sister Mrs. W. J. Morgan at Scotland Texas during a short family stay.
The Chamber of Commerce directors set the banquet for the last Tuesday in October and named a banquet committee led by Roy D. Sanders Jr with Harlow Tibbetts Norman Heath Miss Ermyntrude McNatt and Dr B H Roberts. Scott Whaley will arrange a speaker. The highway committee plans to attend the state highway commission meeting in Austin next Tuesday amid widening debate.
Fred Hoeldtke announces lease and JoAlan Spears purchased the Gary-Nees lot to build an attractive new Sinclair station. A formal opening will be announced later.
Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Butler travel through the western United States on a vacation trip. They visit multiple states and plan further sightseeing, enjoying warm weather and scenic routes along their itinerary.
A Star Oil Co representative reports Bowie’s new city well flowing naturally at 163 barrels per hour on a 16-64 choke. Casing pressure is 800 pounds and tubing pressure 425 pounds.
Two Bowie school board resignations are reported. Joe Prater, Bowie junior high coach, resigns to join Mineral Wells high school staff as basketball coach and assistant football coach. William Morgan also resigns to teach math at Nocona high school, with his wife returning to Nocona schools. Oran Stovall and Margin Stovall return from a trip to New England states and Canada arriving home by train and car.
Senator Wayne Wagonseller aged 34 was fatally injured in a three vehicle collision on a highway near Meacham field in north Fort Worth. He died at St. Joseph’s hospital about an hour later.
The term of the late Senator Wayne Wagonseller ends next year but no regular session is planned until 1957. A special election would be required to fill the vacancy, and Governor Shivers has not called such an election, so the seat may remain vacant.
Remodeling begins Friday morning at Heard's Hardware. Gordon Hearn says new fixtures will go on the south side and a new floor will be installed. A six day sale on General Electric appliances runs Friday through Thursday.
L. V. DeMoss Lonny and Eddie Don attended a Nocona city park reunion honoring Cpl. Travis DeMoss who recently returned from Japan after military service.
Better exhibits are expected at the Montague County Fair with department heads leading the push. The big parade is set for Wednesday afternoon September 21 at 2 pm. Prizes remain the same as last year and catalogues are available at the Chamber of Commerce. Organizations may bid for the lunch room concession by Mrs Earl Sansom, secretary, with bid blanks from the Chamber office.
Seven candidates have entered the Montague County Farm Bureau queen contest to be held at the ball diamond west of Montague August 29 at 6 p.m. A picnic and talent show follow. Eligible entrants are daughters or sisters of Farm Bureau members aged 16 to 22 and unmarried. Entries close August 22 at 5 p.m. Register with A N Arveson, Melvin Fenoglio, or Juanita Bailey.
Bowie moves forward with construction of the city lake as Mayor Mark High and council members turn the first dirt. Crews from John A. Petty and cement subcontractor C H Choate begin work, with engineers from Freeze and Nick present and about 30 workers planned.
An oil rig operated by Cooper Drilling Co. began Monday on the Howard Wheeler land in Hill County near Bowie. The well sits one mile south of the Bowie city edge in block 59 southwest corner. acreage two to three miles away has recently been leased at favorable prices.
The weather bureau installed a temperature and rainfall station on Tuesday at the home of Oran Stovall in Bowie. He will maintain daily records until the new filtration plant opens, after which equipment moves to the plant and data are sent to Kansas City, Missouri.
City wide effort opens in Bowie on Friday August 26 to X-ray all residents 15 years and older. Free screening funded by taxes and Christmas seals aims to detect tuberculosis and other diseases in apparently healthy people. Schedule places Bowie old A and P building August 26 1 pm to 6 pm and August 27 9 am to 6 pm Saint Jo August 30 31 and Nocona September 1 2 3.
Paul Taliaferro was elected principal representative for Area five Homemaking Teachers Advisory Council at a Ft Worth conference. He will serve a two year term as the council’s only principal. Also serving on the council are Miss Henryetta Sands and Mrs. Stanley Davlin. The council plans curricula and standards for homemaking teachers and departments.
Richard Simons president of downtown Ft. Worth Rotary spoke to the Bowie club Wednesday noon. He was introduced by G O Barney vice president of Ft. Worth National Bank and past Rotary leader. Chas Coffield arranged the program with guests C H Bennett and Thos Howard. President James Henderson announced next Tuesday six o clock meeting with district governor as speaker.
Kenneth Walker purchased a newly built three bedroom home by Foster Robinson in the Robinson Hill addition at Bowie’s southern edge. The Walkers have moved into their new residence.
Joe Overstreet purchased a tract of land and three houses from Lyons-Matthews Lumber Co. on Bowie’s north edge. The homes, built two years ago, had been unoccupied due to title issues, which are now cleared and transfer completed this week. Overstreet plans extensive improvements on the property.
Constable J Cc Hendrix with Glen Sutherland county attorney and Tom Roland night watchman raided two private residences Wednesday afternoon, one in Bowie and one outside city limits, seeking illegal liquor sales but found no evidence. Hendrix vowed to continue raids in dry territory.
Coach R. E. Mattingly announces physical examinations for all boys planning to try out for high school football at the Bowie clinic tonight.
Constable J. C. Hendrix picked up two intoxicated men Sunday. One case was filed in the city court and the other in the county court. Both defendants were fined.
The Bowie area hospital reports admissions including Mrs. John White G A Griffin Mrs W H Seely Earl Jones and others from Bowie along with Theodore A Farmer and P P Kindsfather from Bellevue Richard Allen and J W Fuller of Montague and more. Discharges include L T Nivens G A Brashear George Wilson and several others.
About 500 horseback riders are expected in a Friday afternoon parade through Bowie’s business district, hosted by the Bowie Roping Club. The parade begins at 4 30 near the high school, with dozens of riding clubs and floats, and proceeds along multiple streets ending back at the rodeo arena. Over 200 Cowboys will compete in Bowie Roping Club’s annual rodeo with seven events and announcer John Townsend. Roland Reed of Fort Worth will produce the shows at 8 p m both Friday and Saturday nights with a pair of booster trips tied to the event.
A revival begins Sunday at 7 30 PM at First Baptist Church led by Pastor G B Bradshaw. Music will be provided by church members and services run nightly through Sunday August 28.
High school football practice begins Monday morning under Coach R. E. Mattingly. Two sessions daily until school starts. Mattingly says the nucleus for a strong fall team is present with thirteen lettermen returning and players from the B squad joining.
Congratulations announced for five births at Bowie and Dallas area hospitals. Grandparents named for each newborn, with birth dates in August and weights ranging from 6 pounds 1 ounce to 8 pounds 8 ounces. Parents include Worley McDonald Kleinhans Henderson and MelDonald.
