A Friday night meeting in Nocona launched a campaign to plant 20000 acres of vetch within the Upper Elm Red Soil Conservation district including Montague county. Meetings for 25 neighborhood groups span Capps Corner July 31 Valley View August 1 Ringgold August 7 Prairie Valley August 8 Union Cemetery August 10 Bowie August 11 Stoneburg August 18 Montague August 22 at 745 PM except Union Cemetery at 1 PM. Bankers Joe Janeway and James McCall of Nocona presided and IL Copeland from the district office will attend alongside Norman Heath who secured the auditorium. public attendance is invited.
Harve Ratliff a Bowie businessman was elected chairman of the Montague County Chapter of the American Red Cross at a meeting Monday night in Montague. C. D. Meador Saint Jo was named vice chairman with W. L. Scott Nocona as secretary and Lester Miller Bowie as treasurer. Directors include Ratliff Mark High Fred Hoeldtke Dave Rhone plus Mrs. J. M. Dunn Forestburg and Mrs. Roy Pitts Ringgold for three years, with other terms assigned to May Meador Minor and additional holdovers listed.

The Montague County Grand Jury met Tuesday and returned thirteen felony indictments at day’s end. They will reconvene Friday. Juries include foreman Joe Janeway and members John Raymond Joe Fulcher Bowie R T Buck Saint Jo W D Hearn Jack Crownover Nocona Newt Sewell Ringgold J A Landers Forestburg J W Lund Nocona S E O Neal Saint Jo D S Pollock Nocona and Foster Robinson Bowie.
The County School Board will meet Saturday with Hardy L. Seay presiding. The main item is approval of scholastic transfers. Transfer period closed July 31. Members include W. P. Orrell, Charles A. King, William G. Hawkins, Clyde N. Spencer and County Supt. I. B. Williams.
Goldburg Independent School District formed from Stoneburg and Ringgold will operate a high school and elementary at Stoneburg and a grade school at Ringgold. Opening dates set for September 4 with about 260 students expected. Stoneburg faculty includes Bill N. Allen as Superintendent and Paul A. Brooks as Principal.
Mr and Mrs E I Head arrived in New York City with plans to visit Mrs Head's parents Dr and Mrs J T Law son and later go to La Porte to see their daughter Mrs C W Cline. They have spent 18 months in Portuguese East Africa and left Bowie on Christmas Eve 1948 for Africa.
Miss Carolyn McCall seventeen daughter of Mr and Mrs James McCall of Nocona was chosen queen of the Montague County Grape Festival held at the Fruit Laboratory Monday night August 7. She was selected from twelve representatives and will reign with duchesses while Miss Ruth Ann Wilson sixteen daughter of Mr and Mrs George D Wilson of Bowie is maid of honor.
R. Q. Holder and L. E. Sturda vant of the local Dodge Plymouth agency depart Thursday for Detroit for a few days trip.
Montague County Democrats held a session led by County Chairman Roy S S Dunbar. Delegates elected to the State Convention in Mineral Wells on September 12 include Judge and Mrs Louis P Holland Judge and Mrs L D Eakman Montague Mr and Mrs Paul Donald George Allred Sam Lovette Bowie County Attorney Marvin London Montague J Alan Romick served as secretary.
Bowie public schools plan to open September with details in Section 2 of this issue. The note also mentions the installation of a commander for the Speake-Meyer Post of the American Legion on Monday night August 7. hote Patterson Studio.
Bowie public schools will open Monday September 11 for the 1950 51 term according to Claude H Thompson. A later notice will outline registration and classification steps and list faculty. New contracts approved include Newton Lewis vocational agriculture Phil Baker assistant band director Glen Mouvre distributive education coordinator. Roofing and repairs contracts were let to Gary Nees Lumber Company and the veterans building and high school. Distributive education will involve part time work in relevant vocations with local business and professional partners coordinating student placements.
District 10 A coaches and administrators will meet at the High School building next Tuesday night to map season plans for senior and junior grid schedules. Nine schools Bowie Nocona Decatur Henrietta Jacksboro Newcastle Diamond Hill Birdville Handley attend. each school will run an eight game district schedule with discussion on ticket prices contract terms and other matters.
Due to unusual rainfall, the field day set for Thursday August 3 is canceled and the Grape Festival at the Fruit Laboratory Montague is postponed to Monday evening August 7 rain or shine. The coronation at 8 p.m. crowns Miss Carolyn McCall Nocona as Queen of Grapes with maid Ruth Wilson Bowie and a duchess slate from Montague Sun Set Forestburg Bellevue Ringgold Decatur Saint Jo Ryan Hennietta.
Bowie's Company A 49th Reconnaissance Battalion 49th Armored Division National Guard returned Sunday from two weeks training at Fort Hood. The men report hard work and good condition with one expected call into service not materializing this week.
J. C. Gregory has installed modern feed mixing equipment on South Smythe Street and now manufactures a variety of mixed feeds including alfalfa and molasses mix and three dairy feeds by special formulas. Ingredients are accurately mixed and fresh daily. He also offers custom feed mixing and grinding for dairymen and other livestock owners.
The Bowie Chamber of Commerce board meets Monday at 7 30 p m in the City Auditorium office. President Jack Slayden will preside as members consider mist spraying to combat flies and mosquitoes and other important agenda items.
Newton Lewis and family move to Bowie as he becomes the new Vocational Agriculture teacher at Bowie High School succeeding A L Allison. Montague County faces a 34940.57 dollar debt allocation from road bond and county road funds with 6800 retained for right of way, 8148 credited to road bonds, and 19992 allotted to the Commissioners Court for road improvements.
Staff Sgt C E Hill Jr of the U S Air Force has arrived in Tokyo Japan. His parents Mr and Mrs C E Hill Sr of Bowie received a letter Tuesday stating he was sending a package from Tokyo. He left Great Falls Montana July 17 and the letter was postmarked July 27. Hill has served since 1939 and flew 138 missions in World War II as a radar and electronics specialist.
