More than 3,000 attend the first Grape Festival and field day at the Fruit Experiment Farm seven miles north of Bowie. Miss Nora Jean Rhyne of the Bowie News crowned queen, with awards to eight duchesses. The event featured vineyard tours, fruit exhibits, a radio broadcast on WFAA, and extensive coverage by press and radio crews from multiple towns.

Local Troop E Bowie announces 17 year olds may enlist with parental consent and join summer camp at Camp Hood. School attendance not disrupted and enlistees receive spending money. Strong ratings available for motivated joiners in this unit.
The Owens-Brumley Funeral Home marks its eighth year of service with notable growth in offerings. Howard Morris joins as licensed funeral director and internet embalmer, after wartime service, and his wife Reba Morris becomes courteous hostess at the Bowie establishment led by manager R. H. Morris.
About twenty Rainbow girls from Bowie enjoyed a picnic and swim at Lake Bridgeport on Wednesday evening. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Faggard, Mrs. Glenice Holt, Mrs. Gray and Joe Prestwood.
Tom Patterson, a young photographer, opens a new studio at 22 Wise Street in the Eakman building, formerly Bowie Office Supply. He offers portrait and commercial photography, Kodak film developing, and a stock of films and photographic supplies, with a phone for outside work.
Mrs. J. E. Shelton has acquired the Bowie Office Supply business formerly run by Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Rummel. The shop, moved after a recent fire, is now operated with the Shelton Electric Shop across from the Post Office. The new owners plan a full line of office and school supplies.
Several weeks of dry hot weather peaked Thursday at 1 00 p m as shade thermometer readings in Bowie hit 112 degrees marking a record for the period.
Jewel J. Green returned from Alexandria Louisiana where he visited his brother Thomas H Green a patient at the Veterans Hospital.
Arthur W. Large of Chicago spoke at the Grape Festival on Grape Development in the Fort Worth Dallas Red River Horticultural District of Texas and on other farm products. He praised Texas progress and future projects while urging study of commercial opportunities for growers and investors.
Rapid work on the new highway between the Jacksboro Chico paved route and Newport nears completion. Paving to Newport finished this week and opened to traffic while the Bowie to Newport segment awaits final right of way fencing before September contracts.
J C McNatt releases a public statement defending his position on the recent utility rate increase. He notes he opposed the raise and explains city funds from light water and sewerage departments, salary changes, and his limited voting role as mayor. He argues current rates are already high versus neighboring towns and urges consideration of town welfare.
Mrs. J. T. Daniel of Ryan Oklahoma visited her son Ben Daniel and family in Bowie Wednesday evening. She was accompanied by another son Tom Daniel of Stillwater Oklahoma who serves as Executive Secretary for the FFA for the state.
