Enormous storms last week drenched Montague county with about four inches of rain, wrecking numerous buildings and wiping out bridges. Two cyclones merged near the east county line, destroying Myra in Cooke county. J. B. Zetzsche narrowly escaped with his wife and three sons as his farm buildings and part of his house were destroyed. The report notes extensive farm changes with corn planting cut, maize and sorghum crops substituted, and peanuts on some ground. The Bowie area tallies about 36 inches of rain since January 1, far above yearly normal.
In war torn regions under Nazi occupation 125 million people including 30 million children need clothing to shield them from exposure and disease. Every garment helps in this desperate appeal for spare clothing to save lives.
Captain A. A. Sadler of the Texas Defense Guard in Bowie arranged for a newly assigned Army truck to collect donated clothing for the needy in liberated countries. Citizens may call 382 or 450 on Friday or Saturday, April 20 and 21, for pickup, with collection boxes at the First National Bank, Post Office, and City Auditorium. Cotton garments should be washed. all items go to a government distribution organization.
Bowie High School Band directed by George Rucker enters the Region III state contest in Waco from April 26 to 28. About thirty to forty bands compete across twenty seven events including a major concert, solo and ensemble numbers, and a twirling contest.
Rev. and Mrs. A. J. Quinn traveled to Childress on Saturday where they attended the funeral of a relative of Mrs. Quinn.
Mrs. E L Covey returned Monday from Austin where she visited Representative Covey and her son Elmer. Also traveling with her were Mrs I L Chandler and Mrs McIntire.
Pvt Clifton H Bretton is reported killed in Germany, with parents local residents. Sgt Olen E St John, of Sunset area, reported killed in the Pacific on March 24 after being missing. his mother had just returned home when the message arrived.
An editorial notes First National Bank of Bowie deposits at 3 507 204 54 as of March 31 up from 2 371 000 a year earlier. It argues higher deposits reflect local business strength from agriculture oil and trade, urging residents to keep funds in Bowie banks to lift property values and attract industries and payrolls.

Cox Drilling moves onto the R F Mallard survey site eight miles south of Bowie for a 5000 foot Laird A-1 wildcat. Gant test nearby showed oil but was not completed due to drilling issues. Nu-Enamel also plans Posey B-1 in Hildreth, with four wells set to perforate this week: Posey No 1 Heard Davis No 1 Davis No 1 and Heard C-1.
Charlie King reports Bowie Independent School District has 886 scholastics, 440 boys and 446 girls, aged 6 to 17. The total is 35 higher than last year with no boundary expansion, despite many boys serving in the armed forces or attending other schools.

After more than four weeks missing, 77-year-old J. W. Cantrell of Bowie remains unfound. Officials and relatives report no new clues and fear possible foul play.
