Tommy Whitecotton, a Bowie businessman, opens the Modern New Ideal Food Store at 312 West Wise on Saturday April 13. The brick building between Moody’s Service Station and White and Overstreet Motor Company features a large plate glass front, celotex ceiling, air conditioning, walk in meat box, Hussman counters, and modern refrigerated display. H. E. Henning will head the meat dept and Will Ryan the produce dept. Ralph Baker will join after returning from service in Japan.
E H Smart of Navasota is visiting his daughter Mrs Lee McClure and her husband Mr McClure in Texas.
Bowie High School Band under director George Rucker will perform at a benefit concert Thursday night at the high school auditorium. Proceeds fund a trip to the state contest in Waco May 3 and a building fund to erect a band and music hall. Rucker notes band growth, cramped space, and need for acoustical improvements and storage for instruments and library items. Admission is 30 or 60 cents, with options to contribute more to speed the project.
Work is progressing on erection of larger quarters at Star Courts on East Wise Street owned by Jake Hoeffner. Eight new modern fire proof cottages of concrete block tile rise, bringing the total to 20 cottages plus Hoeffner's living quarters and offices.
The Rev W C Baze of Lawton Oklahoma departed Sunday for home following a visit in town with his niece and grandniece Mrs J 48 Kils man and Mrs J A Campbell.
Architects plan a 42 by 65 foot brick clinic addition adjacent to the current Bowie Clinic and Hospital Building. The project doubles capacity, adds convalescent rooms and dental suites, upgrades interior space, and connects the two structures via a covered ramp with anticipated autumn completion.

A record hail storm caused thousands of dollars in damage across a 25 mile long strip from Newport to Montague. Farmers report destroyed corn orchards and fruit losses at the State Fruit Experiment Farm seven miles north of Bowie. Poultry losses and window damage were widespread with big hailstones up to golf ball size.
Tax Collector Wade Bond reports a record rise in automobile licenses issued through April 1 in Montague County. Receipts exceed 67 000 dollars with about 4200 cars registered, surpassing last year's roughly 3500. Funds above 50 000 go to the county road and bridge fund, the rest to the state highway department.
Calves from Bowie District F F A club will be sold Wednesday afternoon April 17 on G Dee Jackson lot opposite the First Methodist Church. A L Allison reports calves can be viewed briefly at Clement Feed & Trade Barn before the auction conducted by Cyde Moore. Clubs from Bowie Nocona Saint Jo Alvord Decatur Paradise Henrietta Bridgeport and Boyd participate.
The regular singing takes place Friday evening April 12 at 7 30 at the First Baptist Church. The public is invited and singers are specially welcome to join.
Friday and Saturday at Bowie Majestic present Just Before Dawn with Warner Baxter Adelle Roberts and Bad Men of the Border with Kirby Grant and Fuzzy Knight. Sunday and Monday feature Frontier Gal with Yvonne De Carlo Rod Cameron and Andy Devine. Tuesday Sing Your Way Home stars Jack Haley and Marcy McGuire. Wednesday Thursday Gene Lost Weekend co stars Ray Milland and Jane Wyman. Ritz shows Frontier Fugitives with Tex Ritter and Dave O'Brien and Kelly in Cover Girl.
Horace Ayres owner says work on the Ayres Frozen Foods and Lockers building is on schedule. Fred Toe of Oklahoma City, contractor, has been in Bowie this week supervising the project and the work is expected to finish soon. Ayres will announce when orders for lockers can be reserved once the project is far enough advanced.
Ben J. Hagman of Weatherford announces his candidacy for Texas State Senator in the 22nd District covering Parker Palo Pinto Jack Wise Denton and Montague Counties. A 37 year old attorney and veteran he plans to publish his platform soon.

Staff Sgt. Walter R. Barker is visiting his mother Mrs J Barker during a two months furlough. He has served in the Army for a year and will be stationed at Camp Carson Colorado with the mountain troops upon returning to active duty.
