Harvey Philips, 25, of Griggsville, died after attempting to thaw frozen pipes in a lard house. He poured gasoline from a six gallon can onto sawdust when a fire in the room sparked an explosion. Philips, who married last March, died within hours. He was employed by Harry Bartholomew.
Everett 8 Sherrow born June 23 1896 near Golden Adams County Indiana died near Colusa January 31 1915 aged 18 years 7 months 8 days He was a member of the We Brothers class United Brothers church Colusa He leaves a father mother one brother Farrel D two sisters Christina and Henrietta two grandmothers and other relatives Two brothers and a sister had died earlier The funeral was held in Colusa then Lorain with attendees from Milton Illinois and Mrs McMullan Rockford Indiana.
A 1915 Avance South Dakota letter corrects a Chronicle obituary for Lovettia Hopson born 1866 in Illinois. It recounts her death October 31 1914 in Fresno California, her marriage to Frank Homer Gorby, two daughters Ora Alice Martin and Anna Belle Wilson, and client Wells. It also notes a box supper at the Bowen Christian church with 26 boxes sold to raise funds.
Frank Crossland, collector, states he will be in Chili Illinois to collect taxes on the upcoming Monday February 15, marking the last day he will be in Chili.
Ralph Binkley who bought the property across from the New Hotel from Wm Nash and Aldo Kemp is making extensive improvements. A new foundation is set plastering and wallpapering is in progress and electric lights are being installed. The Binkley family will move in soon.
The fourth number of the Lecture Course drew a large, attentive crowd Saturday evening. Col. G. A. Gearhart of Buffalo NY presented The Coming Man for ninety minutes, holding interest throughout. He urged the youth and warned that indifference could turn The Coming Man into a woman. He noted today’s young women lead in several life areas. Gearhart would stay Sunday to speak again at the Congregational church.
Miss Gertie Denne, Mr Ar on Decker, Miss Delia Willis, Mrs Chas Phillips, Mrs M F Marsh listed as advertised letters at the post office.
Friday afternoon contest at Bartholomew Grocery featured a bantam rooster and a heavyweight. 253 guesses recorded. Bantam ate 163 grains while heavyweight consumed 591 grains, a 428 grain margin. Mrs A J Cunningham won first prize a 49 pound sack of Golden Sheaf flour. Arthur Allen won second prize a 24 pound sack of Royal No 10 Flour. Mrs W T Hough won third prize two cans Club House Coffee. Large crowd witnessed the event.

The Society of the War of 1812 seeks descendants of soldiers who lived in Illinois or whose bones rest there to share names or information by February 16 at La Prairie Lil. A sales notice follows offering horses cattle and farm implements. Geo J Ehmen signs the notice.
Word reports Lawrence Cox died Monday morning in Galesburg after a year of failing health from consumption. He had moved to California last year with his wife for her health, but she died months later. The note reflects local editorial commentary on advertising practices and independence in journalism.
The Chronicle reviews sketches by Hubert Myers six teen, son of Mr and Mrs L J Myers. He started two years ago after the Titanic sinking and now brings refined works to the office. Myers will begin lessons with Mrs E V Robertson and aims to rank among the country’s top artists.

Officers to be nominated include Village President for 2 years Village Clerk for 2 years three Trustees for 3 years and Treasurer for 1 year. Stanley Cunningham and Miss Flossie Breneman wed in Quincy with Rev. Owens officiating. The couple will live on a farm southeast of Stillwell after visiting Pleasant Plaines Illinois and will be at home to friends after Merch Ist.

Giles McNeal reports a quiet country wedding Saturday at four p m as Mary McNeall and W T Gillis, both known in Bowen, were married. A buffet luncheon followed the ceremony attended by immediate family and Edna L Hamilton of Chicago along with Rev W D McIntosh. The Chronicle offers congratulations.
