Government buys pigs to cut supply and lift prices

Last Wednesday marked the start of a government hog buying program targeting pigs under 100 pounds and sows over 275 pounds. About 30,000 hogs will be removed from normal markets, with 4 million pigs and 1 million sows purchased, plus unborn piglets, to support prices and aid hog raisers.

Government plan outlines hog prices and processing setup

The plan envisions handling about 100,000 pigs and 25,000 sows daily with 150,000 possibilities. Chicago prices range from 9.50 to 6 per 100 pounds, sows receive a 4 bonus, pig price two to three times market, and no forty pound deduction on sows. Federal inspectors certify animals before packers take fixed quotas, with commissions and processing costs covered by the government.
