The Agnostic View of God and Spiritual Knowledge
In a September lecture Beecher argues that knowledge of God cannot come from senses or pure intellect but from inner disposition and moral growth. He likens agnosticism to a cradle, holds that humans cannot fully know God, and that true understanding emerges as one becomes more like Him through striving and virtue.

How Kellogg Blames Defeat on Advance Nominations
New Orleans September 23 Republicans in the third district rally to nominate a candidate for Congress. W P Kellogg holds all regular delegates and is expected to win the nomination despite alleged district dissatisfaction. Brave Lizzie Chotty Rescues Boy From Death in Storm
On April 2, 1884 a Dorchester father and his five year old son were endangered as a runaway horse tore through Dorchester Street. A cloaked young woman, Lizzie Chotty, sprang into danger, leaped to the horse, and saved Ernest Harrowes by catching the bridle and guiding the boy to safety in her arms. The grateful father offered money, but she refused. The event, witnessed by bystanders and a vigilant policeman, made Lizzie a local heroine. Rich with period tone, the item notes Lizzie’s identity as Mrs. Crotty of West Ninth Street and the silver medal later presented to the boy.
