Dorman B Eaton sends a public resignation as civil service commissioner, detailing battles with reform opponents and motives to stay. President Cleveland replies urging continuation, praising reform, and outlining faith in merit over spoils.
Washington September 27 The administration weighs reorganization of the civil service commission. The president has until November 1 to decide Eaton's successor and the timing could affect the postwar reforms and upcoming election dynamics.
In Indianapolis on September 24, Levi Ritter a prominent lawyer clashed with Rev W L Clancy pastor of Irvington Methodist Church at the latter’s visit to Ritter’s home. Clancy disparaged congregants and Ritter. Ritter challenged him outside. In a brief round the pastor was defeated and “pretty well done up.”
In Salem September 22 yesterday marked Mrs. Sarah Osgood 100th birthday widow of John W. Osgood of Salem who died 1863. She is a daughter of Captain Henry Prince whose clerk Nathaniel Bowditch gained world renown. A Bowditch candlestick remains with her. She lives with her son George P. Osgood on Chestnut Street. She is in good health and recited lines from Contentment to guests including neighbor Thomas Cole who is over eighty.
Lillian Norton Gower, famed singer, sought separate maintenance from Frederick A. Gower of Brookline after years of alleged abuse. Ex-Governor Gaston and Robert M. Morse led the case as Gower vanished in a balloon over Paris. She traveled to Paris to claim his estate valued at about $3,000,000, including a Brookline house.
Richard Anderson a farmer from near Fenton left wife and two children with his brother-in-law Charles Cramer. Mrs Anderson, while with Cramer in the garden, saw smoke from the kitchen, and flames quickly engulfed the upper part of the house. The entire house burned, and no trace of the children was found among the ruins.
Goldsmith Maid once the Queen of the Turf died at Fashion Stud Farm near Trenton New Jersey after a brief illness. A post mortem found heart fatty degeneration and enterotome. She retired seven years ago after trotting 182 races with 92 wins and earnings near 250000 dollars.

New York September 25 District Attorney Dorsheimer replies to Secretary Manning about irregular payments to customs inspectors for baggage examinations at the port. He pledges full pursuit of reform, warns that any officer or passenger paying or receiving money will be indicted and tried, and forwards Manning’s letter to the press.
Shippers estimate Pacific coast wheat for export will reach 800000 tons or about 28000000 bushels after accounting for domestic needs and seeding. A London report had pegged exports at 430000 tons, but conservative dealers dispute that, noting the year’s 23000000 bushels crop plus 10000000 carried over, totaling 38000000 bushels in California and Oregon.
Washington September 26 The President via the treasury secretary asked Professor Alexander Agassiz to assume the role of superintendent of the coast survey bureau. The renowned scientist is son of Louis Agassiz and is noted for expertise in mass ape ntific fields, mining speculation wealth, and museum founding. Some assurance has been reported that he will accept.
In Troy on September 27 a county home resident Caroline Jackson, a former slave, is reported to be 117 years old though five years ago records listed her age as 112. She is described as still mobile and largely mentally sharp despite her advanced age.
Framingham Savings Bank defalcation uncovered after five weeks of audit by the savings bank commissioners. Deficiency about 228000 attributed to misentry from a memorandum book by late treasurer Adams. Depositors credited and charged incorrectly and dividends omitted. Bank Examiner Getchell withheld comment on personal appropriation.
L F Fuller, president and treasurer, said he would not oppose the application by the savings bank commissioners for a temporary injunction to stop the bank from doing business until its affairs are overhauled. He noted learnings justify the request but could not say if trustees would contest. The writ is returnable October 27.
Commissioner Getchell estimates the deficit at 228000 but stockholder loss should not exceed 155000. In Superior Court Judge Allen heard a petition for a temporary injunction on the bank. A hearing is set for October 27.

Christine Nilsson drew a massive crowd at the Stockholm Opera House with 30,000 lingering near the hotel. After she sang a Byredian song the crowd surged causing a fatal crush. seventeen people were crushed to death as the crowd thinned.
George Wilkes founder of Wilkes Spirit of the Times dies at 68 in New York. Born 1817, he rose from little known early life to public notice via sensational publications. He served sixty days in the Tombs for the Whip, later published History of Sixty Days in the Tombs. He aided David C. Broderick in California ventures and returned to New York rich, then launched Wilkes Spirit of the Times around 1860, famed for prize fights and racing coverage.

Lourmaine Ky September 26 One of the boldest robberies in the state ends with the arrest of William Carroll Pritchard White Paul McQuade and John Martin four attaches of Doris circus. Four youths from Bagdad robbed on a moving train near Frankfort. Turner Scofield Mills and Weber injured with broken bones and other wounds. Turner aided by Chief of Police Whalen to arrest the four suspects at the circus grounds.
The Sun reports union leader James M. Duncan of Typographical Union No 6 sent a letter to Republican governor candidate Ira Davenport urging him to pressure the Tribune to hire union printers and pay union rates. If Davenport fails to respond satisfactorily within a week, Duncan warns the union will portray the Republican party as endorsing Whiteland tactics to the state’s organized workers.
In Cheyenne Wyoming on September 27 and into the early hours, workers circulated anonymous dodgers threatening tar and feathers and eviction of Chinese residents after October 1. Citizens are split, with some favoring removal, but authorities vow protection if violence breaks out as steam laundry owners announce dismissal of Chinese staff.
Miners at the New Castle mines in Seattle stage a night visit by masked whites who force the guard to surrender and issue a 24 hour expulsion deadline. A special train departs to remove the Chinese workers. Separately, eighteen Chinese gentlemen touring the U S arrive in Washington and seek a meeting with the President over Wyoming tensions.

Five Trakene stallions owned by the German government are exhibited at Antony & Runk's Fifth Avenue riding academy in New York. Previously only Barnum imported Trakene stock. The horses are imported for breeding fine saddle horses. The Trakene is a cross between English thoroughbred and Arab. In the Franco-Prussian War marches, the Trakene was tested and deemed Europe’s best cavalry horse.
The German steamer Werra from Bremen arrived with a gold cargo worth $1,250,000. Dispatches list recipients including Eugene Kelly with $500,000 and major banks Heidelbach Seath Welieheimer & Co., J. & W. Seligman Co., L. Von Hoffman & Co., and Ploch & Co. The coin was in double eagles.
Deputies and county officers surged into a secluded Somerset Fayette county hut after weeks of pursuit. Jonathan Herbstetter fired on agents as they closed in. A complete still and distilling gear were seized and destroyed, with risks and pursuit continuing through the mountains.
