A Washington by Bal lard Smith exposes the era’s fierce attacks on Grover Cleveland while recounting how lawmakers from both parties assess his personality, leadership, and policy. Martin Foran of Ohio notes Mills bill opposition and Cleveland’s better outlook versus Harrison. tariff revision remains unaddressed.
The Dover gathering opened with temporary chair John Pilling as the meeting endorsed the national platform and ticket, denounced Cleveland's pension policy, and urged a constitutional convention by the next Legislature. Kent county backed Rev. Jonathan Willis and Sussex Charles H. Treat for the gubernatorial nomination. Treat led on the first ballot as the convention adjourned with a State central committee named.
Washington reports R W Brucker a Providence businessman and his wife visiting for a few days. He predicts Democrats can carry Rhode Island for Cleveland with a determined effort citing 6000 new voters enabled by repealing a voter ownership law and notes a Democratic majority among these new voters.

Ansonia Connecticut September 18 Cyrus De Forest owns a North Wilton farm on the Danbury branch of the Housatonic railway. Each May a swarm of bees enters between the door and ceiling and cannot be kept out. At season end the floor is removed and the honey collected, 94 pounds last year and 76 pounds this year. The bees reappear with remarkable regularity, once yearly and sometimes earlier, and though killed each year, a new swarm returns the next season.
Yellow fever panic eases as Jacksonville reports 134 new cases and 10 deaths with 1878 total cases and 212 deaths. most new cases among colored residents. two new cases and one death at McCleary. Trains unable to stop in Memphis amid the outbreak.
At a State board of health meeting in New Orleans the Texas & Pacific agent read a telegram showing Shreveport health officials refused to quarantine New Orleans but agreed to embargo points below Alexandria. President Wilkinen condemned the action as mob rule and pledged state support to local boards. The railroad seeks a U.S. court order to block Shreveport interference with T&P trains.
Governor Taylor of Memrutis reports he cannot mobilize militia for quarantine duties due to lack of authority and funds. President Hadden requests militia. the state may supply volunteers. Dr Blanks announces plan to restrict train arrivals in Mripran to stowaway movement only, amid yellow fever or suspected cases.
A Jackson Tenn dispatch reports Nashville has quarantined against Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Memphis. No trains from these areas may stop within five miles of the city. Two new fever cases and no deaths. Decatur Ala dispatch says two new cases today, total 17 cases and four deaths. city well supplied with physicians and nurses.
A Columbus Kentucky special reports quarantine in effect and no steamboats may land within five miles of the city. The measure aims to curb spread and affects river traffic into the area around New Orleans on Sept 23.
In Mississippi Washington Sept 23 Surgeon General Hamilton received a telegram from Dr Mitchell president of the Jacksonville board of health stating some nurses there are drunken, neglectful and incompetent and ordered their removal to Camp Perry. Dr Carlisle from Gainesville reports no new cases all the sick well. A naval officer was assigned to Fernandina Florida to inspect conditions. Dr Johnson in Jackson telegraphs declining aid citing only 10 cases and one death to date. A telegram to Dr Cochran Decatur Alabama met with Need no aid at present and few left in Poclar except Heaton.
Sept 23 All freight and passenger trains on the Atlantic and Great Southern railroad have been abandoned due to strict quarantine here and along the line. Traffic on Northern and Western roads remains open. Entry to the city requires proof of identity. Jackson citizens threaten to burn bridges and tear up tracks to prevent Jackson penetration of the quarantine.
Severe storm in Vera Cruz wrecked the Metlac iron bridge, scattering debris and tearing away multiple pillars. Landslides closed the line at Cumbres, delaying passengers and freight. Traffic will cease for weeks, impacting half yearly earnings and vast cargo stranded in Vera Cruz.
The Switchmen's Mutual Aid Association discussed a federation plan with engineers firemen and brakemen. The outline proposes local committees settle disputes, refereed to a four orders arbitration board, with extreme measures and strike support possible. Macuras Me Sept 24 George Sinclair shot Benjamin Pineo by accident Saturday in the woods thinking him a deer. Pineo died minutes after the shooting. He leaves a wife and five children.
William Peck, a wealthy Topeka grocer, found his wife May Fiske performing in a Wichita dime museum. She was warned, rushed off stage, and driven away in a hack. Peck has pursued her for two months across western towns amid a pending divorce suit with counter charges.

Guascow New York September 21 An amusing encounter occurred in the Hudson river near a dock a large water snake tussled with an eel half its size The eel was captured thrice then released and the snake dragged it to a beach where the eel moved toward the water The snake circled loomed and lashed its tail in a failed bid to secure a final meal Finally the eel escaped to open water leaving the snake agitated and empty handed
