At the Washington navy yard two soldiers, Michael Joyce and John C. Barry, were fatally wounded by an accidental discharge of an inch calibre gun used in practice. Barry died instantly. Joyce is dying, leaving a wife and two children. A board of survey investigates the accident cause.
New York reports the death of John P Sinnott a marine court judge from heart disease at his residence He was born in Ireland came to the United States as a boy worked for Samuel J Tilden studied law with Tilden and was appointed judge by the governor Later elected to a full term His conduct on the bench was questioned by the Bar Association charged with intoxication and a trial was pending The vacancy will be filled at the next election.
A Baltimore and Ohio railroad collision at Relay station nine miles from Baltimore involved a passenger train from Ellicott City rear ended by a 37-car coal freight. One passenger car destroyed and freight engine badly damaged. Six people were injured as crowded coaches narrowly avoided disaster at about fifteen miles per hour.
Oliver Bushee, sixty, once respected in Woonsocket, was driving home to his farm four miles from Woonsocket in North Smithfield when his horse and wagon plunged into Hart's pond. He was found this morning seated upright, whip and reins in hand. He leaves a widow and four children.
Found in Faunt River on September 19 Julia Harrington fifteen, employed at Bancroft House New Bedford, arrived in the city to join Aberle's minstrels of New York. Her mother and hotel clerk followed, locating her on the street before the heat began. Another New Bedford girl accompanied her when found.
