In Woobury Massachusetts on September 11 Samuel Cook & Co shoe makers completed a pair of Oxford tie slippers for Mrs Cleveland. The shoes, brown bead-work in four leaves on the quarters and ramp, are French kid width AA and size 342. The order came via Shuman Green of Albany New York and were handmade at the factory of Samuel Cook & Co.
In Worcester Massachusetts on September 9 Nellie Jordan a 29 year old boarder lay bleeding from a ruptured varicose vein in her left leg. Officer Horgan and Dr Halloran attended. About 2 a.m. she wed James Connor with Father Finneran presiding before slipping into terminal illness.
Washington reports indicate Indiana Democrats healed dissensions and back President Cleveland. Chairman Kenna cites strong campaign funding and broad support, expecting Indiana to deliver a large majority. General Clark notes widespread popularity of Cleveland in the West and no anticipated opposition this fall. Representative Matson and Heron voice confidence in a substantial Indiana victory.
Ottawa September 10 Yesterday evening Carroll Diere and Dacheraux lumber men left Britannia nine miles up the river to reach a crib. A strong wind drove the crib over the Chaudiere falls and it hung on rocks above the falls. Dawn revealed the three men in danger with no aid available. Goons Kempt and James Kennedy then launched a boat and fought the current for over an hour to reach them and pull them to safety. The rescuers battled a torrent so powerful the boat nearly went over the falls.
John S. Mosby recalls April 1861 in Abingdon Virginia where Lincoln's call for troops sparked a wave of patriotic fervor, the formation of Washington Mounted Rifles, and the march to Richmond. He describes meeting Captain William K. Jones, the join of Stonewall Jackson's division, the penitentiary clothes episode, and the early actions around Winchester and Martinsburg with Stuart observing Patterson and the Shenandoah, leading up to Bull Run readiness.
A night operator, James Calvin, escaped injury as dynamite blasts shattered the Lake Shore Railroad signal tower at main and stock yards in Lake. A tall masked man fled west, leaving gas pipe fragments, soaked cotton, a liquid bottle, and a suspicious bundle found later near the tower. Police collected gear and warned of further explosives in a rear shed and an old mattress.
Professor Gurney of Harvard College died at his summer residence in Beverly Pride's Crossing this morning at 6 30 of heart disease after a brief illness. He lived in Old Cambridge and was valued for moral strength as well as education, mourned by faculty and beyond.
About twenty League of American Wheelmen from Buffalo arrived in Ithaca on September 10 for their annual tour. Two riders, Warner and Dakin, fell on a steep hill. Warner suffered a ghastly chin wound. Dakin had a head concussion and possible skull fracture and lies unconscious. The rest proceed to New York tonight.
Dr George J Adams of Massachusetts is arrested in Curcaco charged with defrauding multiple people by taking money to locate hidden treasure linked to a World War era incident near New Orleans. Adams claimed medical practice and military service, and after a long dig his search exposes empty odds as he contends locals aided a treasure hunt now ruined.
Captain Patrick Vele of the schooner Herbert M Rogers, after a Greenland voyage, details a brutal icebound scouting from Flemish Cap to Davis Straits. He reports heavy pack ice, near Cape Resolution, and a Danish man of war destroying 20000 pounds of fish at Holsteinborg before escaping.
Special reports to the Troy Times from northern New York western Vermont and Massachusetts indicate rye has been the best crop. Hay yields are large though quality varies. Oats show good growth while buckwheat will be small and poor. Apples beets pears and plums will be abundant.
