Nine or ten survivors among seventy nine aboard the City of Vera Cruz after a hurricane drove the steamer to wreck off Florida. Survivors recount graphic scenes of tossing seas, wrecked boats, and heroism by officers and passengers. Names of crew and passengers listed. many perished, several bodies found along the coast.
The City of Vera Cruz steamer disaster near St Augustine left seventy three aboard with only nine survivors, eight crew and one passenger A K Owen. Five bodies recovered include a young man an old man a middle aged man two women. Mason Talbot survivor reports massive seas thirty miles offshore and water in the hold as the ship sank.
New York City to have an underground line from the Battery to Harlem River. The New York Underground Railroad Company filed papers at the county clerk's office. Plans are complete with construction awards promised within a fortnight and work to start by October or November. General McClellan may be president. European bonds arranged. completion targeted by June 1883.

Two robbers accosted travelers on the stage line, shooting as one drew a pistol and another plundered money and jewelry worth about $2000. They forced each passenger to drink whiskey from a bottle left on the ground, then fled with a loud yell. Rumor says the out stage may have been robbed of over $700.
New York September 2 a pardoned convict leaped from a third story window at Bible House amid a crowd. An impassioned speaker blamed charity failures and urged aid to ex-convicts. A reporter notes the office, Cutter, and the limited relief funds as the motive and scene unfolded.
Halifax report details a man and a young woman seen together on the Liverpool road. The woman’s body was found burned near Barrens and identified by a facial likeness, with suspect John Hill of Avonport arrested at Lawrencetown. A photograph was recovered from his pocket.
