Man Survives Nine Weeks Without Food Near Verplanck Woods

Patrick Smith a fifty five year old mechanic vanished from Verplanck woods on June 25 and survived nine weeks without food and five days without water. Found by Joan Madigan and Patrick Kyai near a hill overlooking Pennsylvania Coal Company works and the Hudson river, he was unrecognizable, with extreme emaciation and hair and facial hair matted. Doctors say he might have lived only a day or two longer. He recalls it was Sunday and that he never closed his eyes at night. He hid during the day in a hollow circle among bushes and trees, and the surrounding bark stripped trees and gnawed shrub tops attest to his brutal confinement. His wife and family recognized him only by voice. He is expected to recover.
