News from the Buckeye State shows a Democratic victory with about a 25 000 vote majority. The Congressional delegation is expected to be fourteen Democrats and five Republicans, a nine seat gain for Democrats. Hamilton County also elected the Democratic slate.
Columbus reports from 82, 162, 646, and 641 towns show Democratic gains, with Newman favored for secretary of state by an estimated 16,000 and a statewide majority near 25,000. Powell Warner and Hurd lead for Congress as Republicans concede several districts.
Chairman Nash outlines on October 11 that five districts are secure for Republicans. Brigham loses in the sixth, Hart in the twelfth, Davis in the fifteenth, and Robinson wins the ninth. Morey and McClure undecided in their districts while Democrats claim McKinley defeat.
The Gazette puts Democratic gains at about 20 000 statewide and at least 14 congressmen, citing divisions in the Republican party and national administration effects. The Enquirer claims fifteen Ohio congressmen, and Speaker Keifer notes liquor laws and Sunday closing aided the defeat while predicting six to seven Republican House members. Charles S. Childs, assistant superintendent of Cambridge Cemetery on Coolidge Avenue, was killed in a planned attack by two masked men while returning with pay. The robbers fled toward Brighton after pistol fire, brick blows, and a cut harness left the horse roaming. Doctors say Childs’s injuries are fatal. police pursue leads from cemetery workers and local witnesses.
In St Louis a corpse was detained by Adams Express after the consignee balked at $284.50 in charges, including a $186 undertaker fee and double living passenger express rates. New York authorities ordered delivery to the father’s agents, with the undertaker’s charges in question.
Gustave Pannilli, on a prospecting trip in eastern Virginia, reports a frightening shower of aerolites in the Gillis mountains. Fragments rained around him on a slope as he carried a shovel and pick, one shard striking the shovel handle and leaving a dent. He recalls clouds of dust on the hill minutes earlier and heard a distant explosion moments before rocks began to fall, noting he did not investigate the stones or debris.
A Portland despatch reports North ern Pacific strikers in Oregon have escalated after the board rate held at old price. Men demand 250 per day and threaten hangings of supervisor Hallett. Chinamen expelled, troops reportedly sought, and an escort of 25 soldiers protects the paymaster Thiessen as 200 ex convicts and fugitives loom among hostile workers.
In Hayesville Ohio on February 11 1880 a reader praises Hop Bitters claiming remarkable health benefits after using two bellies of the medicine. The message endorses the remedy and urges patients to try it for strong results, signed C B Mercer M D.
Washington October 13 recall of the Garfield assassination note the discovery of a second bullet from Guiteau's pistol. A claim that the second bullet struck a Baltimore resident was debunked then another theory tied it to putty in a glazier's window. A heater injury theory is noted with a lead fragment found in an iron pipe piece.
Washington October 12 Lieutenant George L Converse Jr wed the daughter of Admiral Jenkins of the Navy. He was wounded in a brush with Apaches five months earlier, a ball lodged in his brain and destroyed one eye. An operation was postponed until after marriage due to risks. Additionally reports from Washington October 14 note a Treasury clerk’s critique of Hubbell committee leadership and Dorsey, calling for resignations or removal. October 13 Alaska reports a plague-like illness in Sitka with distressing conditions among native people and criticism of Captain Pearson for his conduct.
The Agricultural Department reports unusually high October cotton returns with an average of 88, the highest for October in ten years except 1875 and 1878. Texas leads with an average near 100. Prospects vary widely between early frost risk and a long favorable season due to rank growth, greenness, and late ripening.
A Washington dispatch says Blaine’s arrival in town and talks with Virginia Straightouts were faked by a local reporter misled by a letter from the ex secretary to a Virginia congressman. A forged draft altered from 15 to 85 thousand dollars led to the American Exchange National Bank paying 85,000 to the Metropolitan National Bank after a chain from Bank of St. Joseph to German National Bank of Denver. The Denver bank refuses to repay 84,985 and suit has been filed with an attachment issued.
In Dallas at a camp meeting evangelist Major Penn prayed for divine punishment upon a disturbance. The man collapsed and died. At Laimpeso a similar plea preceded a lamp toppling fatality. In Sand Mountain near Georgia, J. Hartberger a Pittsburgh moulder, was killed by two desperadoes Walker and Reed. Walker was captured. Reed escaped. Walker said the murder came without motive, done “merely for fun.” The story notes the danger and reports the arrest.
Dublin October 14 The convention at Athenry Galway yesterday adopted resolutions declaring the right to national independence accepting the land for the people principle approving peasant proprietary and amending the Bright clauses of the land act A resolution deprecates grass farming as paralyzing industry and increasing pauperism The convention also resolved to prevent hunting until extra police in the county are dispensed with.

From Constantinople on October 15, the Russian government advised the Porte that payment of the Theo-Nussian war indemnity should begin on the first of Taniey next. The Porte replied that the funds for the first installment were left to Turkey to arrange.
The Lebanon Dime Savings Bank cashier George D Rise was knocked down on October 12 in Lebanon Penn and robbed of 380000. Two men attacked him after he returned from Philadelphia carrying funds for mills. Rise was badly injured but gave alarm, rewards offered by Rise and local residents. The following day Rice, also cashier, reported another attack with 89000 stolen as he traveled from Philadelphia to Lebanon. No arrests yet.

A 30-year-old Mrs Louise Rebie led three men to the American Screw Company office after a dispute over back pay. She struck Burdick with a rawhide whip inflicting head and shoulder blows while two men pinioned him. an assistant keeper was knocked down as the group fled. Arrests likely.
David Manning, 26, a worker at Amoskeag mills, was wiping shafting when his fingers caught, he spun around the shaft three times, and his arm tore from the elbow before release. He had married just a month ago.
A formless assailant in a shabby coat stabbed twelve women in Union Square near Johnson's dry goods store. He used large compasses as weapons, was overpowered after a struggle, and the attacker, identified as Ernest De Bracque of 113 Bleecker Street, was taken to Mercer Street station. Mrs Hanley, wife of Officer Hanley, lies critically wounded.
Alonzo W. Slayback, a prominent Democratic politician and Confederate veteran, was shot by J A Cockrell, editor of the Post Despatch, after public quarrel over an editorial. Slayback died minutes later. Cockrell escaped with no immediate injury as bystanders watched.
Grand Secretary Layton announces a nationwide Knights of Labor boycott against East Liverpool potteries. Members will receive pocket cards bearing the potteries trademarks and will refuse to buy or work for any firm handling their goods. The pledge extends to all branches of organized labor in solidarity.
In North Framingham two youths George Bates and Frank Hofacaway went chestnutting with a gun. A partridge leaped and Bates fired wounding elderly farmer Belcher in the arm chest and stomach. The victim’s condition is reported as comfortable after the incident.
In Tilton Georgia two rival turpentine producers Green Mayo and Martin Harrell quarreled at the court grounds over an insulting letter. When Mayo demanded a retraction Harrell fired. About forty to fifty shots were exchanged with both principals mortally wounded. Harrell supporter Jordan was killed and Vickers was badly wounded and believed dead. Also an unrelated ad for Lydia E Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound appears.
