In a portrait of Cornelius and William H Vanderbilt, the Chicago era exposes their business mastery and social ascent. The piece lauds their honesty, public duties, and disciplined upbringing, noting Cornelius as a stabilizing mayoral figure and William as a lavish yet prudent spender, shaping New York’s transit empire and society. In Richmond the General Assembly of the Knights of Labor faced a bitter factional split as Powderly abandoned the chair to defend the Home Club. Seven hundred ten delegates seated, others refused. A race row arose over District 49’s treatment of a colored delegate, with police and mayoral intervention averting disturbance. Powderly denounced conflicting race reports and pledged to state the union’s true position.
