Washington May 15 One strong friend of Senator Conkling says he will press a full public accounting of Garfield over tenure of office and appointments. The national convention of the Ancient Order of Hibernians adjourned in St Louis to meet in Chicago in May 1882. The report lists 50000 members and 500000 in the treasury. Resolutions denounce Britain over Ireland, endorse Parnell Davitt and Dillon, and urge 5 percent of divisions to aid the Irish Land League.
In South Hampstead New Hampshire two men forced entry at about 2 a.m. into the home of 55 year old Miss Eliza Noyes bound and gagged her and demanded her money. She said it was in the bank. The robbers ransacked the house opened a trunk and took 100 dollars before fleeing. The woman freed herself within an hour and alerted authorities. She sustained head and facial bruises.
In Cincinnati on May 16 a trades union picnic at Inwood Park drew an estimated 50,000 visitors through day and night. A morning procession included twenty six city unions plus delegations from Louisville Dayton Springfield and Indianapolis.
