London May 5 1883 royal health remains fragile after Victoria's April knee injury. A Balmoral cairn ceremony is planned in June with royal attendance. W D Somers of Central street Leominster, a prominent 28 year local businessman, died instantly in a factory belt accident. While adjusting a belt his clothing caught in shafting and he was spun. his neck was broken. He was about 60.
Dr Henry Meyer a wealthy German physician faces sensational charges after admitting he conspired with men he believed to be ex convicts to poison his wife for a $60000 estate. He had been suspected in prior wife poisonings and the drowning of a stepchild, an heir to the estate.
Chauncey Hillgard of Woodford County Pennsylvania and William Fente two surveyors clashed over a piece of wood used as a pillow. Hillgard knocked Fente down and began choking him when Fente stabbed Hillgard in the stomach during the altercation in Jamestown Oak.
The Herald interviews Mrs Langtry in New York on May 6. She praises American women as pretty yet overdressed, noting Baltimore among the prettiest. She says she loves America intensely and hopes someday to become an American.

After surgery she first sees sparrows mistaken for teacups, later recognizes a watch, learns distances, and fears losing sight at night. She and her racebelieve Dr Fox has superhuman power.
S W Tallmadge of the Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce releases a speculative grain table claiming no wheat crop by states under current conditions. The figures rely on Agricultural Department reports and acreage data with possible losses if spring weather deteriorates.
An extract from a 1862 Gladstone speech cited by the Commercial Advertiser contrasts his praise of Davis’s military and nation-building with today’s UK stance toward the United States. The London Times report quotes him predicting Southern victory and secession with confidence.

A terrific explosion at the refuge oil works of FE Richardson near Wickssora Mississippi killed Miss Minnie Kavender instantly. Miss Lillie Parks and Harry Parks were fatally injured, with Night Waterman Donaly and Andy Greene badly hurt. Engineer Hobson lost a leg while attempting rescues.
A posse from Little Rock chased a Texas gang of horse thieves to Darlington in Indian Territory after they wrecked several horses at Henrietta. A fierce clash followed leaving two outlaws dead and the posse clearing the pursuit.
READING PA May 7 Charles Weller of Wallert Iron Company drank fifteen quarts of water and died. Coroner investigates suspect poisoning as possible cause of death.
A neatly dressed young woman rushed into a Philadelphia drug store at Eighth and Wharton, sought the proprietor in haste, then was driven to a rear room and restrained for a time. Police investigated the incident as a possible kidnapping attempt with no immediate arrests reported.
A bright baby smiles as a doctor congratulates a mother who, reaching the door, remembers to check her pocketbook. The doctor quietly points to the baby on the sofa, prompting the mother to return and retrieve her child.
In Winchester on May 7 John Callahan obtained rum and forced his 3 year old son to drink. The child convulsed and died at 3:30 AM after being abused while intoxicated. Callahan appeared in Fourth District Court on the charge of common drunkard. case continued pending medical examination of the remains.
George Parkman of Palmyra wed Mrs Myra Mills and moved with her and her mother to Corinna. Early Tuesday he fell ill took herb tea then attacked his wife. He smashed a kitchen window and fought Footman before being tied. He died soon after. coroner summoned. Parkman had temperate habits. liquor suspected.
The Mount Vernon Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore introduced a ritual similar to Episcopal worship led by Rev. Dr. Felton. The change, including Gloria Patri, the Psalter, and the Apostles Creed, drew ire from some members but trustees approved the move citing authorization in the Methodist Book of Discipline. Boxes slid down the slope killing six men J R Gillis Colin Campbell A Fraser Wallace McGillivray J Mc Eachern and William Hannahan. Injured include A McLeod John Nicholson Richard Taylor Irving and Malcom Beaton. two boys Irving and Malcom Beaton likely to recover.
New Haven May 7 A quiet wedding here Thursday afternoon echoed the Hicks Lord match of years past. The bride, widow of Colonel Reid brother to Whitelaw Reid, wed John M Quackenbos of Brooklyn aged about 70 and reputed very wealthy. It is believed to be a runaway ceremony with relatives awaiting the property disposition.
In San Francisco in May 56 light rains aided wheat crop prospects. An increased acreage is expected and California is calculated to reach about 1,100,000 tons for export nextness.
A nine year old girl named Annie in Lincoln suffers frozen rotting feet from alleged mother neglect. The Bisbee family houses the Tyler family with nine children in a wooded Lincoln dwelling. A Concord doctor diagnosed severe neglect and frost damage. Annie was moved to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment. Local authorities and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children investigated, with the mother denying intent while the case shocks the state.

Panama reports a crewman on the American whaler Hope On was maltreated by the mate and marooned at an uninhabited shore near Juan Fernandez. With biscuits and a makeshift raft, the sailor drifted at sea until a sloop near San Juan Bautista bay sighted and rescued him. Formal charges were filed against the ship's captain.
The Alaska arrived after setting a new westward record of 6 days 23 hours 48 minutes sailing from Queenstown on April 29. Captain Murray earned a commodore's pennant for the fastest time on record.
