Charles J. Fergus on April 29 died this evening. He was the famed pitcher for the Philadelphia Baseball Club, known as Fergy. The report notes a death due to typhoid fever and marks his fame in early Philadelphia sports history.
In Damanhour near Alexandria a siege at a mosque ended in violence as escaped prisoners refused surrender. Fifteen convicts were killed and two wounded, while police counted four dead or wounded in the battle.
In Cloverdale on April 28 two masked bandits robbed Wells Fargo & Co. on a Lakeport stage. Constable Al Crighter was shot and killed after a pursuit from Cloverdale into the mountains near Profile Rock. Samuel Allen fired back as the robbers fled down a cliff. A posse hunts the outlaws today.
An earthquake struck Glens Falls New York at about 6 o'clock waking about half the population. Houses were shaken dishes rattled and items fell from shelves with reports of minor damage across the city.
The Vatican decree condemns the plan of campaign and boycott in landlord tenant disputes in Ireland. It states rents set by mutual agreement must not be reduced by tenants and condemns using interdicts to pressure landowners. Lord Randolph Churchill pushes for local government reforms in Ireland amid hints of home rule strategy.
The Canadian lacrosse team defeated United Belfast on Saturday by a margin not stated. News reached this city of the death of Very Rev. William H. B. Deasy, vice rector of the American College at Rome. He was born in Boston and educated at the Latin School and Orange Catholic seminary before studying in Rome. After being ordained he taught at the college and rose to the post of voice-actor. He had suffered declining health for some time.
The Knights of Labor, unhappy with Minneapolis 1886 leadership, form a provisional committee after a five day session. They allege extravagance and mismanagement by the general executive board, claim membership fell from 702000 to 240000, and pledge to mobilize knights to overthrow the ring in control. Joseph Buchanan, secretary, invites assemblies to learn details and discuss organization.
A BeavLeventamne Ohio report describes a crowding crowd crush at Rushsylvania's Brookman's Hall during a school exhibition. The second floor collapsed funnel fashion, sending attendees about 20 feet to the ground. At least two dead include Mrs Alexander and Miss Garwood. many others seriously injured, with numerous names listed and possibly sixty more injured.
Jacksonville April 26 Five Cuban provinces are under siege and more than 100 towns face danger as bandits gain power. A visiting gentleman claims the government led by Marin aims to frame rebels for crimes to gain liberty while preparing 20 000 troops to exterminate the gangs. American residents fear brutal actions under military law and Guardia Civil authority amid ongoing unrest.
A 56 year old woman at Massachusetts General Hospital had her tongue removed by a chain saw procedure after lye burns and ulcer formation. Ether anesthesia allowed a painless operation with no bleeding. two weeks later she swallowed milk and could speak clearly, delivering a committee report at a fair.
Miss Ida Belle Richards of St Louis daughter of the late Captain C Richards married Dr E N Wright in Glasgow Presbyterian Church. Wright is an educated Cherokee Indian and son of Dr Allen Wright a prominent Cherokee. The groom studied at Albany Medical College graduating in 1884 and is practicing medicine.
Rev Edgar L Hermance of White Plains shot himself in the pulpit at 3:30 pm, dying four hours later. Residence shows wealth, 16 years at the church amid salary disputes and a failed dry goods investment. His wife is Yale President Woolsey’s daughter. they leave three children.

Workmen uncover a pint whiskey flask dated 1828 inside a chimney of an 1888 McKeesport house built by Orlando Grier. A tin box nearby holds notes predicting future events such as slavery ending after a great cost, prohibition as a battle cry, and a prophecy that the flask will become a principal element in a future conflict.
Mile Deaco, a slack wire artist, performed an open air act from a hotel window to a tree across the street. The wire broke midair, she fell 100 feet, striking pavement. Doctors say she broke knees, injured spine, and suffered internal ruptures likely to cause death.
A St Louis Post Dispatch excerpt recalls a politician's youth in Missouri. Albert W. Hedberg, 22, a Burlington road fireman, shot and killed Herbert B. Newell and badly wounded George Cable, both strikers, after an encounter near Hedberg’s home. Hedberg claims self defense. inquest to unfold next day. Newell was a veteran engineer on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroad.
In Washington April 80 the House dispensed with reference and allowed members to file measures at the clerk's desk. The tariff bill was taken up in committee of the whole with remarks by Mr Grosvenor Ohio claiming the Democrats seek to repeal the war tax. He argued the protective system dates to the Civil War and should end as internal revenue taxes remain the sole wartime levy.
Ernest Kleeschulte of St. Louis killed his wife in a cabin near O’Fallon after deserting her two sons aged 6 and 8. He shot the wife first, then killed the older boy, beat the younger, and then killed himself with a final bullet near the home.
A Kansas City report says C Leland Jr and J M Graybill were chosen as Republican delegates from the First Kansas district where Senator Ingalls lives. The selection is viewed as a blow to Ingalls and his bid for a complimentary vote from Kansas.
An east-bound Southern Pacific California express near Valentine Station, about 800 miles west of San Antonio, saw Conductor Charles Server and cattleman Sam Taylor die after a drunken passenger attacked with a dirk. Server fired, was stabbed five times, and died within minutes. Taylor survived about an hour.
A party of 14 highwaymen stopped a passenger train three miles past Ivoro on the Interoceanic railway Friday evening and robbed passengers and trainmen. The treasury box yielded over 3000 pesos for the company.
