A historic blizzard cripples transport from New York to Maine. Rail lines freeze, telegraph wires fail, and Boston and Providence suffer major delays with widespread isolation and several deaths reported as the storm drains regional networks and then slowly clears.
A severe blizzard struck New York State and New York City beginning Sunday evening, paralyzing transportation and communications. Snow piled up to 20 feet in some areas with 6 to 8 foot drifts. telegraph lines failed. trains stalled. pilot boats wrecked. city losses estimated at 7 million dollars as streets and elevated lines shut down.
A major New Jersey storm destroyed shipping and caused many deaths along the coast and inland. Dozens of vessels wrecked at Delaware breakwater with at least 25 drowned. Rail and road lines were blocked. Jersey City to Newark trains derailed injuring workers. Names of the missing and dead include Baber Livingston, John Murphy, John Boyer, and Alexander Bennett among others. The Legislature postponed sessions as Trenton was cut off for 60 hours.
Reports from Lewes Delaware describe 22 drowned or frozen to death as 28 barks and schooners were driven ashore during a northern gale. Vessels broke from moorings, crews washed overboard, and wreckage lined two miles of shore. The storm, with 50 mph winds, caused widespread damage and disrupted communications from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia.
Unprecedented storm damage hits the Chesapeake region with 30 or more lives lost. Vessels cast ashore, sunk, or wrecked. 100 to 200 boats affected, including oyster schooners. Survivors recount freezing conditions and rescues as crews battled hunger and cold.

John E Hughes, in Atlanta, signed a bill of sale transferring himself and his body after death to Augustus Kaglemacher to settle old debts. He claimed drunkenness when signing. Hughes pleaded guilty in Recorder's Court, fined $5.75, then paraded away to work on Kaglemacher's farm three miles from Atlanta, with the creditor asserting ownership for life.
