A Herald dispatch canvasses Democratic representatives to gauge 1880 nomination strength. Thurman leads among favorites, with Hendricks, Bayard, and others cited. Tilden largely excluded. Republican odds favor Grant, with various states noting regional leanings and rival preferences.
In West Virginia Thurman is the first choice for 2 with 1 acceptable. Wisconsin shows no choice. Of 127 interviewed, 50 name Thurman as first choice and 11 find him acceptable. Hendricks is first choice for 1 and acceptable to 28. Bayard is first choice for 10 and acceptable to 19. Tilden is first choice for 13 and acceptable to 9. Forty two named no choice.
North Berwick Maine March 10 a floor gave way during a town meeting sending about fifty people to the lower floor. No fatalities but many seriously injured with multiple fractures and internal injuries among the injured. medical aid from nearby facilities assisted the victims.
In Essex Market police court Samuel Edgart testified that Henry M. Greenberg assaulted him and he was carried from a bed by Samuel Bernstein Solomon Geist and Jacob Taupenflinger. They admitted membership in a bar room club that fabricates witnesses for pay and agreed to testify falsely.
A Maronbone Ky report recounts Robert O Willis burying 65000 in gold and 10000 in jewelry in a cave on his farm during the war. He vanished soon after and was presumed killed by guerillas. On his widow’s deathbed the secret surfaced to her pastor and attorneys, leading to treasures being found. She left the jewelry and 40000 to longtime servants and the farm homestead.
A New York report cites prison statistics showing sanitary labor benefits. It notes dates from 1857 to 1878 with varying numbers at work, illness, insanity, and deaths. 1870 and 1876 figures illustrate changes in productivity and health outcomes among inmates.

From Charlottesville Virginia three university students shot William Gilmore a colored shoemaker after a confrontation over a hat being knocked off. The students claim self defense while witnesses say they fired in response. The shooter was bailed at five hundred dollars and five professors testified to the students good character.
In New York on March 7 a suit by Robert Thompson against the estate of David Ely seeks $3500 alleging a fraudulent loan using bonds issued by Roswell Peck of East Haddam Connecticut. Ely, deceased, had high social and commercial standing and left an estate valued around $1.5 million.
Captain Blair, dismissed from the army for marrying General Gordon Granger’s widow while his wife lived in Scotland, is in New York. Mrs. Granger has reportedly gone west. Blair states he would rather have died than face the exposure this affair brings.
Dr Adam Perry of Portsmouth died instantly at his home at midnight from heart disease. A Connecticut native, he practiced here about thirty one years as a botanical physician and was seen by patients yesterday. He leaves a wife and several children, including Dr John S. Perry, a local dentist.
Charles Hill was sentenced in Williamsport to ten years hard labor and a $6500 fine plus costs for arson that destroyed his neighbor Thomas Barclay's barn on February 14 after a dispute at a party.
In Camden Maine on March 10 the Greenback party swept all town officers with about three to one over Democrats who offered no slate. Moderator Wood, Republican, received 78 votes while Greenback Dr Eaton topped with 248. First selectman Adams, Republican, had 91 votes and Greenback Wellman led with 332. Other Greenback officers elected in the same proportion.
The secretary of the treasury announced a circular naming the treasurer and assistant treasurers in Baltimore Boston Chicago Cincinnati New Orleans New York Philadelphia St Louis and San Francisco to sell at par in lawful money ten dollar certificates of deposit bearing four percent interest convertible at any time into four percent bonds.
Mansfield Ohio March 10 report says Sheriff Victory of Douglass county was killed by ex sheriff Shert Alsup during an arrest attempt. The deputy fired at Alsup, killing him and accidentally killing Alsup's boy child.
Eastfort Me March 9 The Turkish Empire an English 1600 ton vessel formerly the Stamboul left St John for Dublin when a gale drove her ashore on Big Duck island Grand Menan. Captain West and six crew perished. Pilot Cline and seven crew survived by clinging to wreckage. Rescue efforts by local fishermen and residents saved survivors and recovered wreckage though bodies had not yet been found. Captain Weates and family left in St John.
Joseph Hummel, once a Boston resident and now in Cincinnati, plans to travel to London to claim an alleged fortune tied to Caspar Weiss of Germany. Mrs Hummel, his wife, is said to be the heir, with bonds reportedly totaling 21 million dollars and yielding four percent interest for seventy five years.
John C Wells alias Charles A Clark arraigned in police court on adultery charge with Hattie Bates. Held on $600 bail for May term. Wells fled from Portland after manufacturing Green Mountain bitters. Bates, now at the poor farm, is partially insane. Wells had a wife and child in New Hampshire and had victimized Mrs Thompson and others at Fisnerville.
Secretary Sherman states arrears of the pension bill were demanded by claim agents not pensioners. He credits soldiers for the country’s defense and argues land and rebels laws differ from modern funding. He notes taxes fund victory money and proposes borrowing to cover temporary debt increase.
A London dated cable to the Globe notes Sir George Campbell will ask the chancellor of the exchequer if the government has information authenticating the speech by the British governor general at the opening of Canada’s Dominion parliament.
