Surrounded by Whales Off Whales Beaching Encounter

The schooner M. B. Miller from Savannah, captained by Young, reached New York after nine days at sea. On June 20 in latitude 36 65 60, longitude 74 14 west, a calm day brought a vast school of whales within two feet of the vessel. The creatures surfaced and blew, moving around the ship for three hours while the crew observed their size from 35 to 40 feet, noting their blunt square heads, small eyes, and distinctive fin and fluke. The crew, wary after an oak fragment hit a whale, decided harpooning would be unsafe for the moment.
