In Jersey City at the Hudson river tunnel caisson collapse at Sixteenth street, 21 laborers buried. Seven rescued alive, fourteen died. Water flooded the opening as steam fire-engines worked to save the remaining. Huge crowd gathered amid intense excitement.
The New York Telegram reports a deadly shaft accident at Jersey City involving a night crew of thirty men. Twenty-two fatalities and eight escapees followed a cave in caused by a misadjusted air lock and a failing brick wall while tunneling for the Hudson Tunnel Railroad Company. Rescue efforts continued as a new shaft was planned. names of the dead and saved are listed, with officials noting the air lock and roof failure as the probable cause.
James Hayes recounts how he and 27 others narrowly escaped a tunnel collapse at Jersey City. He describes bricked twin tunnels, a bursting roof, rising floodwaters, and a fatal jammed air lock door that trapped men before eight survived by sprinting toward the shaft. Witnesses include Superintendent Woodland engineer Moses Pierson night watchman Birdsall and Delsen Anderson whose body blocked the door.

New York July 21. The Hudson River Tunnel Company reports a fatal accident during shift changes at the connecting chamber between two tunnels. Twenty eight men were inside when an iron roof section fell, releasing compressed air and flooding the shaft area. Twenty were killed and eight escaped through an airlock. Recovery of bodies expected about three days, with a three week project delay.
Jersey City July 26 crowds thronged the meadow near the tunnel disaster as pumps cleared water from the shaft. Divers reported the air-lock jammed by debris, and the company began sinking a coffer dam to reach the tunnel bed and tear away iron plates for body search. Recovery could take weeks. officials expect bodies may be preserved in an airtight section near the air-lock for months.
Mrs Nesmith wife of Lt H T Nesmith and two children Helen Deaken aged 12 and Bessie Fanshaw aged 10 drowned while bathing on a secluded Atlantic City beach. A strong current between the breakwater and the lighthouse swept them beyond depth. Rescue efforts failed and bodies were recovered with one child still missing.
In Rockville Maryland on a July weekend John Diggs, a Black laborer, dragged and kept his employer’s wife in her room, beat her severely with a chair, and fractured her skull. He fled, neighbors aided, and a vigilance committee formed as the husband was summoned.
In Danville on Saturday night white roughs invaded the colored camp meeting grounds. A pitched battle with officers ensued after attempts to demolish the sutler’s tent. About fifty shots were fired with clubs and boulders used. Bill Dickman Fred Manker and Jake White seriously hurt. police defended the scene.
New York July 26 Dr. Tanner enters the twenty ninth day of his fast at noon today and is reported in good condition. He rested on Sunday and his watchers note more restlessness than yesterday but see no sign of lapse and grow more confident in his ability to complete the undertaking.
Rockester July 26. Jack Brown and Patrick Kelly, enemies for two years, fought. Brown whipped, then drew a revolver and fired three times as Kelly turned to leave. One ball struck Kelly in the ankle, two hit the neck. The latter two likely fatal. Kelly survives.
South Amboy New Jersey July 26 Andrew Lester nineteen of Albany hired a boat for crabbing on the South River with a companion Catlin. In midstream Lester dived overboard his head became stuck in mud and ten minutes after being pulled free he died.
London reports a Turkish council reply to the powers on ceding Turkish lands to Greece. Larissa Janina and Zozo resist cession, demanding Turkey keep control. Montenegrin borders and a threatened war raise tensions. Athens says Greece mobilizes reserves under French command as Greece expands armed forces amid regional strain.
Report from Paris notes a £2,000,000 deal in progress and hints at Constantinople proposals if Greece advances into Albanian lands. It is stated that Turkish forces could be transformed into Albanian troops and hundreds of Albanian uniforms have been produced in Constantinople for this purpose.
A Baltimore despatch reports a complex Toledo land dispute linked to Captain Ford and Emeline Ford. Key figures include President Hayes, Chief Justice Waite, and Myron H. Tilden. The case involves Toledo property and a disputed Toledo land title tied to family secrets and inheritance. More revelations could renew interest and legal action.
A naturalized American of St. Louis, A. C. Boisselier, born in the United States, had gone to Germany with his two sons who later fled military service. The circuit court ruled the brothers American citizens, but the royal provisional government claims no jurisdiction and seeks to arrest them as military fugitives. The case is sent to the State Department to request Berlin’s explanation.
In Montpelier a brass cannon used for a flag raising salute discharged early while loaded by Henry Willey Clark Roberts Ira Washburn and Edward Wright. Willey lost his left arm and Roberts lost his right arm. Willey had amputation below the elbow. Roberts had his arm removed above the wrist. Both men are hospitalized and improving. The cannon, state property, allegedly caused by a swab and misfire, previously killed a man named La Rock.
Jessie A. Moore twenty one faced trial for attempted poison of her three year old son driven by poverty and desertion. She made shirts for twenty cents a dozen and seldom ate. Hoping to win a physician's love she deemed her child objectionable and was judged half insane at the time. She has been sent to an insane asylum.
Charles Norton shot policeman O'Neil in a Kokomo saloon disturbance. Arrested and jailed, Norton was lynched by a crowd that overpowered guards. He confessed other murders and said he deserved death.
Clark C. Clapper, age thirty eight, was struck by an engine on the Nashua and Lowell road while crossing with a load of stone at North Chelmsford. He was thrown fifty feet, killed instantly after receiving a warning from the station master. The collision caused about $1000 damage to the locomotive and split the heavy cart into kindling. He leaves a family.
In New York on July 22 Catharine Gordon, described as a disreputable woman, was sentenced to the penitentiary for cruel acts on her six year old daughter. Prosecution stated she forced whiskey down the child’s throat, stuffed snuff into her mouth, and beat her with a fire shovel, causing serious injuries likely to result in death from a fractured skull.
Early morning blaze wipes out Kelleher's livery on Eighth street in Washington. Horses and vehicles saved. The stable, one of the city's oldest, is notable as the place where Wilkes Booth hired the horse used to ride out of town after Lincoln's assassination.
The carrier race from Columbus Ohio to Hudson City New Jersey near New York concluded yesterday. A blue cock from Columbus won by covering 470 miles in twenty six and three quarter hours, the fastest time on record. The owner refused one hundred dollars for the bird.
Subpoenas are being served on witnesses in Harrisburg this morning in cases of Ige S. Smith Christian Long and E J McCune charged with corruptions of a members of the legislature.
Detroit July 23 report details a disaster when the propeller Garland collided with the steam yacht Mamie near Grassy Island light. Fifteen aboard Mamie perished including twelve altar boys and two women. Father Blydenburg and four boys survived.
Paris reports the death by self poisoning of Mrs Annie Wetmore of New York at Lady Albert Pelham Clinton's Rue Millault residence. A famed beauty about 36, she was formerly engaged to the Marquis of Anglesey before his June marriage to Minnie King. Grief over the marriage drove her to suicide, causing a genuine stir in the American colony.
A new steamer H. P. Dexter owned by Evansville and Cairo Packet Company burned to the waterline in the Ohio River near Louisville. The crew escaped with some scorches. cargo included salt and iron from Pittsburg to Evansville. Vessel loss estimated at 45,000 with cargo value undetermined.
In J McNamara country store at New Portage five miles south of Akron Thomas Wheeler sixty years old died after entering the store intoxicated and quarreling. A man playfully grabbed Wheeler pushed him back and wheeled him by the neck causing a fatal fall.
Havre July 26 The mail steamer Derwent from the West Indies reached Yellow Jack harbor with yellow fever aboard. Several deaths occurred during the voyage and port authorities plan strict quarantine. The captain says no signs appeared until days after departure, and officials believe the risk remains limited to passengers and crew.
Louisville July 23 A special reports three African American men are on trial at Oakinda Alabama for mutilating white burials at Poplar Springs. They exhumed bodies to test bones in the hands believed to grant luck at card playing.
Salt Lake City July 20. Full census returns place Utah’s population at about 144000, up 65 percent in ten years. At the last April conference Mormons counted 122000, leaving about 42000 non-Mormons. in 1870 non-Mormons were under 10000.
In Indianapolis, George Rink, fifteen, accidentally shot his younger brother Eddie, twelve, with a small pistol loaded with two bullets. One bullet pierced the right temple and the other the skull. doctors fear the wounded boy will die. A hue and cry is reported in Washington over a sensational case of a man sought for a grievous assault on a woman.
A despatch from police headquarters reports a man named Dorsey seen near Rae Point of Rocks after meeting a cal man. Armed horsemen from Montgomery County chase him, aim to arrest and lynch him, with a rope prepared for immediate execution upon capture.
Evarts defense of Spain’s maritime rights sparks protest as Spanish authorities vow to stop landing pirates and to sink vessels with contraband. The Merritt crew plans affidavits asserting they were six to seven miles off the coast when fired upon. The state department will consider owners’ statements next week.

East St. Louis July 24 The friends of Judge Mayo a banker of Olney who vanished at Relay depot over a year ago were summoned to identify a decomposed body found by railroad workers in a zinc box The mutilated remains show a broken right arm a throat cut and a head wound Clothing will decide identity Mayo is presumed murdered and robbed after disappearance with relatives spending hundreds to locate him
From Nanaimo comes word that at Wellington a large crowd gathered for prizes when Thomas Pollard of the Maggie Eseed, drunk and chained by the wrist to a barn post, set ablaze. Volunteers forced entry to rescue him but he perished in the fire.
Three young American Jesuits arrive aboard the steamship Italy in New York from London. Thomas Sherman son of General Sherman, Thomas Kernan son of Senator Kernan, and Van Rensselaer of Albany's Patroon family. All have spent two years in England at Roehampton College and will proceed to Woodstock Maryland for novitiate work.
Louisville reports an escaped Frankfort penitentiary convict Vanderhide abducted and outraged a thirteen year old Rebecca Johnson near Brownsboro before murdering her and hiding the body with stones. Vandernile was captured. Providence notice: Isaiah Carr fired four shots at his nephew Caleb Carr striking his left lower rib. Caleb survived after extraction.
In St. Paul Minnesota on July 24 Dr Tanner’s divorced wife and a confidant oppose his theory that excessive pleating grew into a mania. He pressed his ideas on his wife who resented the quarrel and left him. She preferred good living and three square meals daily.
In New York on July 26 the James F Fitzgerald Association of New York held its annual chowder party in Jersey City. A fight erupted as a member attacked Hanks Post and attempted to gut his place leading to thirty party members being arrested and detained at police headquarters.
