The president faced a sudden relapse with chills and fever when a pus cavity formed and blocked drainage. Surgeons Agnew Hamilton performed a back incision to drain the cavity about 1 p.m. Relief followed as fever abated and pulse fell. doctors deemed pyemia risk passed.
July 25 dispatches describe the President’s improving condition after surgery. He slept well, had a single fever spike, and showed steady progress as the wound discharge continued, with physicians satisfied by the progress and the President expressing cheerfulness.
Washington July 25 Mrs Garfield, anxious about blood poisoning, was reassured by Dr Hamiltons report that the operation succeeded and the cavity drains well. The immediate danger is removed though future chills or new pockets of pus may occur. General Swaim notes the President is improving, taking nourishment, sleeping well, and shows optimism for tomorrow.
Washington July 25 Dr Bliss refutes Dr Walsh Retrospect criticisms of his treatment. He argues no nynemia or blood poisoning developed as patient’s system remained strong and nourished. He notes favorable ventilation and that probing would have sparked outrage, predicting the President will recover in days.
In the Retrospect editor Dr Walsh denounces a scandal harming medicine after a president’s wounding. The piece contrasts Townshend and Baxter for restraint with Dr Bliss’s arrogance, alleging professional discourtesy and improper dismissal of trusted colleagues. It questions motives behind removing interior physicians for outsiders.

Washington July 25 excellent progress is reported by Professors Bell and Lainter in a machine to locate the bullet in the President's body. Watts in Baltimore telegraphed that a bullet three inches from the detector coil was detected. They improve the apparatus with conical primary and circular secondary coils and greater power batteries. The device works in experiments on bodies but the telephones produce faint sound. The President Despondent. Washington July 25 the President rests only with morphia and shows great mental and physical exhaustion. Mrs. Edson notes full despondency and poor response to cheer. Crump says a good day may come but fears a setback before the sea voyage.
Distinguished visitors including Ex-President Hayes General Sherman Governor Foster and other officials gathered in CLype on July 22 for the unveiling of General McPhersons monument. A sunrise salute opened the ceremonies with a reception then a cemetery unveiling where General Sherman performed the statue unveiling and General M F Force gave the oration. The monument site was graced by General McPhersons aged mother and close relatives amid a decoratively filled city with many former officers present.
Walla Walla July 26 reports Hanford nearly burned as several valuable blocks were destroyed in a large town fire. Firefighters fought the blaze through the night with damage heavy to merchants and residences. Local officials assess the cause and tally losses while residents begin cleanup.
At Albany on July 22 a joint convention held one ballot at noon then recess. In caucus at 3 p m many speeches pro and con and d fal ling occurred before a vote produced Lapham 61 Conkling 27 Woodford 1 Evarts 1. Democrats taunted Republicans while Republicans argued Lee was secure. Adjournment followed with cheers for Garfield Conkling Lapham and Potter supporters. The convention reassembled and elected Er G Lapham senator to succeed Roscoe Conkling on the fifty six ballot by 56 votes with 184 cast and 43 necessary for a choice.
New York July 22. Senator Conkling in his Fifth Avenue Hotel room expresses gratitude to legislators who supported him and deflects questions on Lapham's election. Roscoe Conkling praises Pearren band courage, Garfield's recovery inspires unity, and Lapham defends faction terms while urging Republican consolidation.

Hon E G Lapham selected yesterday by joint convention at Albany to replace Roscoe Conkling. Born Oct 18 1814, he grew up on a farm and was a Canandaigua Academy classmate of Stephen A Douglas. A civil engineer and lawyer, he supported unit rule and urged Cincinnati delegates to vote for Conkling for president in 1876. He joined Stalwart ranks yet may not oppose the President. He is famed for the 1806 Constitutional Convention and has an uneven Congressional impact.
The New York Sun reflects on Roscoe Conkling's political decline after resigning office. It laments his fall yet praises his past wartime patriotism, cites three reasons for rejoicing his downfall including press freedom and the electoral commission, and notes his place beside Aaron Burr in public history.
A Philadelphia Record correspondent notes Kate Chase Sprague, famed as Canonchet’s former mistress, staying at the Shelburne in Atlantic City with three children and two nurses. She avoids public discussion, while gossip notes her sale of the Sprague estate and keen reading of New York newspapers.
Elizabeth Coleman admits shooting George Coles at Harry Miner’s Theatre saying Coles intoxicated her and betrayed her. She claims divorce petitions and child custody proceedings by her husband, explains motive, and states Coles was dying from the wounds.
Adolfo Holt of New York a German whiskey and American goods dealer attempted death by own action last night in Mexico by shooting. He is now slowly dying. The cause of his rash act is unknown. His business affairs are in good condition.

The Nihilist threat to the Czar and the latest on the land bill’s clauses are among the key items.
An 85 year old English gentleman in Lincolnshire reportedly commissions a giant balloon to witness the planet's destruction. He plans to ascend with three years of provisions including brandy and claret, hoping to outlast mankind as he foresees the end.
An elderly gentleman outlines a venture to descend at a chosen moment and seek a distant refuge with minimal company. Secretary Stanton fires multiple dispatches from Washington to Edwards Pierrepont and F K Cutting in New York on May 12 1505 and May 13 1505 urging criminal and civil action against Horace Greeley of the Tribune for alleged incitement to assassinate President Lincoln. Stanton warns of malice and possible conspiracies aiming to finish Lincoln’s work and references owners of the Tribune. The telegrams discuss securing Tribune issues since Lincoln’s murder and potential arrest implications. Hon. Nathan Clifford senior associate justice of the United States died at Cornish this morning after a long illness. He was unconscious for days and passed peacefully at 9 o clock. He leaves a widow and five children Charles Annie N Cummings William H Fannie Brown and George Franklin.
Secretary Jaine informs Congressman Buck that German authorities released June 30 a Connecticut citizen named Brink residing in Manchester who was pressed into German military service while visiting ancestral home on the Rhine.
Washington reports from Chief Nimms of the bureau of statistics that breadstuffs exported from the United States in June totaled 20,605,915 dollars, down from 28,263,190 dollars in June last year. For the six months ended June 30 the value reached 111,981,154 dollars, about ten million more than the same period in 1880, while the annual total shows a decline of around fifteen million dollars.
Captain Sawyer of the bark Ibis from Pensacola reports passing two miles of sperm whales eighty miles off Pimlico sound on Saturday and Sunday last. He estimates about 700 whales in the pod and oil value in the millions, but had no means to capture them.
Albany July 23 judge Robertson resigns the Senate presidency to become collector of the port of New York. He vows to run the office on business principles, reduce sinecures, and pare staff to fit need. Democrats issue an address denouncing Conkling Platt and Miller while urging voters.
In Vermont, on a Delaware and Hudson line between Whitehall and Ticonderoga, engineer Caswell reversed to avoid a rock on a curve but the train struck the boulder. The engine wrecked in the lake while the baggage and express cars remained on track. The fireman leaped free. Caswell perished with his hand on the throttle. He leaves a wife and two children.
July 26 report from Terroville describes an open cut collapse at the Caledonia mine burying seven miners. Three were rescued. four are dead including John Costello James Roach Pat Hawkins and L H Hamilton. Foreman L B Goodman died when a supporting arch collapsed near the shaft.
The first division of engineers reaches Tenuacan and will return to Puebla after surveying routes between these points. The second division surveys Tehbuacan to Oaxaca and routes between Pueblo and Oaxaca. The third surveys Oaxaca to Ejutla and Miahnatlan finding a pass to the Pacific Ocean. The fourth works Vera Cruz Anton Lizardo to the tableland joining Puebla to Oaxaca. grading to start in a week. Machine shops will be located at Puebla near coal mines.
