About 10 000 telegraph operatives walk out causing widespread disruption. Leaders claim overwhelming organization and vow to win demands while discussing a cooperative telegraph company to replace Western Union.
Eugene J. O Connor reports the Boston assembly of the Brotherhood of Telegraph Operators has recruited forty new members since the strike began. The walkout shuts offices in Gloucester Lowell and Lynn and threatens interoceanic communication as twenty four cable operators at Duxbury and North Sydney resign, with further moves threatened against AP operators and railroad lines.
In New York on July 22 a dramatic clash shook the Western Union Telegraph Company as losses mount and directors confront a looming leadership shakeup. An angry exchange between Jay Gould and General Thomas T. Eckert in the building highlighted a crisis ending with a locked office and unease over who is steering the firm.

Organizers announce city meetings including Rev. Hedlam an Anestiean clergyman who will back the Biidhango cause. Orthodox circles condemn the action stirring intense churchman debate. In Hudderfield tramway case the jury censures the driver for valve tampering blamed for the catastrophe.
K E H Carson of East Rochester New Hampshire rode eleven miles from Gorham to the Mount Washington summit on a two wheeled design with a front small wheel and a large rear wheel using an oscillating treadle. He completed the descent in about two hours and thirty minutes reaching Glen House around 4 PM. Carson previously rode in Maine and claims this feat eclipses prior mountain rides in the United States given the steep grades.
The surgeon general reports six cholera cases in London and the City of Washington steamer with yellow fever cases at Havana. Inspectors will screen ships from London and Liverpool. no US shores have yellow fever so far. Delays blamed on the telegraph strike. officials fear hindering starved operations.
An engineer and fireman on the Holyhead line fell asleep while on duty as the Irish mail raced toward Chester. The signalman at Llandudno Junction ordered signals to clear, guiding the engine into a siding. Colwyn Bay signalman warned with fog signals. the engine passed at speed, woke the crew, and the engine stopped. An inquiry found both men asleep for fifteen hours and they were discharged.

The repackaged umbrella turns out to be old and worthless, a setup to expose the man’s own cleverness. The incident ends with a receipt and a half dollar given before the reveal.
