A Tribute of Affection at Williams College Alumni
In Williams Town on July 4 the alumni meeting elected J M Barker of Pittsfield to Garfield’s board seat and added about $3000 to the Garfield memorial fund. Cyrus W Field’s memorial windows were presented as part of the day’s observances, and President Hopkins’s address reflected on President Garfield’s life, the nation’s mourning, and lessons for scholars and citizens alike. The Garfield memorial fund later endowed Williams College’s chair of ancient languages with Hewitt of Chicago as the holder.
