Chicago July 7 The Cleveland men are optimistic after last night’s victory securing the Kings County delegation. General Butler looms as the central obstacle to their plans, with offers of cabinet leadership and platform control if he supports the nominee. Tammany and Cleveland factions align around Butler as the strongest opponent to Cleveland, while McDonald emerges as a leading vice-presidential candidate favored by both sides.
John Kelly gave an interview saying he would try to break the unit rule and appeal to the convention if needed. He predicted Cleveland would lose New York by about 75,000 if the rule held. He dismissed Slocum as unworthy and supported McDonald and Slocum or Thurman and Slocum as feasible tickets.
General Butler addressed Massachusetts delegates in Chicago on July 7, urging unity to wield influence in the national campaign. He denied rumors of aiding rival factions, emphasized Democratic principles, and pledged mutual concessions for victory. Denver July 7 Ute Indians attacked Wilson, Carlisle and Johnson's cattle camp in western La Platte county near the Utah line on July 3. Two Wilson boys aged 8 and 10 rode 20 hours to reach safety as five Indians were killed, several wounded, and 11 horses slain with 100 stolen. Cowboys driven out, camps burned, provisions carried off. Indian theft had vexed cattlemen. a man pursuing horses was killed. Fort Lewis cavalry sent to drive Indians back toward their reservation.
Washington July 7 The first session of Congress ends quietly with final adjournment at 3 p.m. The Navy bill follows Miller's amendment as the Senate last concurring in the House. The galleries are full and the Capitol shows little bustle as the day closes.
In Washington five senators attended at 10 am as the Senate receded from its amendments to the naval appropriation bill. Hale and Hawley urged a strong navy while Morgan defended the Democratic stance. the motion to recede passed and the conference report was adopted. The Senate adjourned briefly after thanks for Edmunds. Blackburn elected temporary House speaker in Carlisle’s absence amid pension bill actions.
Port Perry Ontario faced near complete destruction as a massive blaze gutted the town. The fire, fanned by lacking fire brigades, destroyed public buildings banks businesses and manufacturing sites with total damage estimated at about 200000 dollars.
Professor H. A. Clum was killed instantly in Binghamton New York while preparing gas for an oxyhydrogen light. The right side of his face was crushed and mangled, as if struck by a shell. He was a noted figure in mechanics.

Baltimore July 6 A well known eccentric preacher Rev Samuel J Kreamer was deceived by Lizzie C Leech of Troy New York whom he married after meeting at Ashby camp meeting. The couple’s Norfolk trip revealed she was already married to Charles Leech and she absconded with Kreamer s cash and household goods. He faces divorce and financial ruin.
A Boston widow of a Jeffersonian Democrat forms a plan to present a carved gavel to the Democratic presidential nominee at Chicago. The gavel’s handle uses Palmetto wood and Charter Oak wood, with panels from Putnam lineage, marble from Julius Caesar’s palace ruins, Lincoln’s log cabin, Washington’s tomb, and a Boston Common elm, crafted by Irving & Casson and placed in trust for delivery through party channels.
Frank H. Cushman, a Merchants' National Bank employee, was captured at Havre, France, after fleeing by steamer Lessing from Boston. He admitted stealing 250 in gold and 4500 in currency, forged a note for 100 with his uncle's name, and faces forgery charges while custody transfers from Detective Parker to authorities.
Lewiston July 1 Lewis Jore a town bootblack and depot porter known for paying real estate taxes has saved 2500 in eight years. Last year he worked constantly and saved 3679 while earning 18 in one day. He organizes boy blacks during the State fair and takes a cut of their earnings. He is famed for his stance and theoretical bootblacking discourse.
Violent thunderstorms swept England and Scotland over the last day causing widespread damage to crops houses and livestock with losses estimated at 2 000 000. Reports from affected areas indicate twelve deaths from lightning as officials present the Bartholdi statue in London.

William Johnson of College Point I J and for months pursued Emma Anderson who rejected him. She moved to Brooklyn and he became deranged. In a heat wave he attacked furniture, threatened kill, fought constables, and was restrained after a ladder entry. He is to be sent to the State asylum for the insane after treatment.
In Water Street, New Haven, Thomas Alling uncovered a hidden vault beneath garret floor at the Benedict Arnold house. The four and a half by six foot chamber, plastered along its sides, likely served as a concealed retreat or hiding place during the Revolutionary War. Discovered by accident near a chimney and former bookcase, its purpose remains speculative.
Abner R Tucker of Dartmouth and New Bedford, a prominent and independent thinker, dies at age 66 after a long illness. He built a large wholesale and retail grocery trade, ran a nine-whaleship agency, and was active in politics with Whigs and later Democrats. Survived by second wife and two children, Benjamin and Mrs Graham.
Newcomerstown Ohio July 6 At the South Olive oil fields a pulled out plug released gas and oil that reached a furnace and ignited the derrick. A massive explosion sent flames seventy feet high. Robert Stevens died after being buried and mangled. Joseph Ayers and Edward Mullen perished on the rigging as workers fell from the seventy foot derrick. The well remains burning and flames reach about seventy five feet.

Elsie Rhodes daughter of Raul Rhodes a farmer near West Canada creek Ohio City Herkimer county was bitten by a waddog eight years ago. The wound healed but hydrophobia attacks have occurred recently with frequent paroxysms and require four men to hold her in bed. The case is singular and attributed to the eight year old bite.
