Fort Donelson Armies Clash In Two Hour Cannonade Fight

Fort Donelson faced a two hour cannonade as Federal ironclads struggled to silence river batteries. The Confederate defense, hampered by poor coordination, failed to exploit a chance to break the siege, leading to a costly withdrawal and surrender. Fort Henry and Donelson’s battles reveal miscoordination among Floyd Pillow Buckner and Forrest, with Grant and Foote pressing the investiture and Confederate retreat under nightfall.

Movements in Meat Prices Reach Seaside and Mountain Markets

Exporters aim to hold current price levels as demand for meats for seaside and mountain resorts remains steady. Week ending June 30, 1883 shows lower live cattle and dressed meat exports to London, Liverpool and Glasgow, with prices in Liverpool and London stable but risk of decline if Canadian shipments surge. Western beef, hogs, and veal markets exhibit demoralization in swine, heavy cattle cheaper than last year, while mutton and lamb trade stays active with firmer prices and scarce high quality sheep and veal.
