Amid Maine upheaval on January 16 1880 Joseph L Smith was elected governor with 54 011 to 4004 constituting a dual government scene. The Fusionists seized the statehouse while Republicans later secured Davis as governor after a complex ballot. The crisis ended with Davis recognized by Chamberlain and a peaceful transfer formalized in letters and orders.
The document thanks Hon. Charles E. Nash mayor of Augusta and Sheriff William H. Libuy for preserving peace during a serious crisis. It credits the mayor and his police with maintaining order without military force, aided by deputies, and commends Maine citizens for bearing the unusual powers to protect property and rights amid an absence of civil government.
In Augusta on January 17 1880 Chadbourne notified ex secretary Sawyer of his election and duties as secretary of state. Sawyer refused to recognize him and meetings with Governor Davis followed as conflicts over the state seal and archives escalated. Major Folsom and Frank Nye changes mark dual offices amid ongoing power dispute.
Augusta January 18. Secretary of State Lawyer denounces insurrection in Maine. He condemns illegal seizure of state archives, illegitimate governor and council, and calls on the people to defend constitutional authority and safeguard liberty. He urges prompt action to vindicate law and order.
A Republican caucus at Avugusta discussed nominating Samuel Gallagher for adjutant general amid doubts about his fitness and the military department’s rising prominence. Eugene Hale defended Gallagher while noting friction with Major General Chamberlain. A committee will confer with Gallagher as Chamberlain reportedly would not serve if Gallagher is chosen.
Augusta January 19 The Fusionists held a closed caucus with Fusionist lawmakers present. They favored keeping their organization intact and avoiding the Republican legislature until the court decision, not an opinion, is reached. Continued on the fourth pages
A brutal murder shocked Groton Massachusetts as Mrs Maria L Crue age twenty seven was killed in her home by a tramp who lingered after luring her with a tale of buying the farm. The crime scene showed a 22 caliber pistol shot to the head and attempted strangulation indicated by torn undergarments. Local authorities and residents mount a manhunt with a $200 reward offered by Leeds Green.
Authorities are diligently searching for the murderer as police pursue the suspect, nicknamed the Suspected Tramp, who visited Mrs. James Bradley near the crime scene on Saturday afternoon. He asked to see Mr. Bradley and left quickly when told he was in back of the house, saying he did not wish to see him.

New York reports the Louisville and Nashville company has purchased a majority stake in the Nashville and Chattanooga, gaining control of its lines and contracts. The deal includes the Mobile and Montgomery and may extend to New Orleans, creating a southward system near 3500 miles with major links through Louisville Nashville Decatur Montgomery Mobile and Savannah.
General Brady second assistant postmaster general defended star route costs during Saturday hearings. He claimed the service could run through year end with 1300 new routes and other routes kept, cutting others to cover expedition pay totaling 6 416 510 for the year, still needing a 512 510 deficiency appropriation. He refused to provide names when pressed by congressmen and said he would run the service even if a 20 million deficiency occurred, trusting Congress to sustain him.
The Maria Duncan crew of twelve faced a severe December voyage with continual pumping as their barque leaked and cargo shifted. A land slide destroyed much of the picturesque village Alcala del Jucar in Murcia on the Jucar river left bank. About 3000 residents faced many deaths and injuries in the disaster.

Joseph Beamer eighteen year old from South Blackinton was killed near the Blackinton bridge after jumping from an express train heading to Troy. He and his step father Gustav Heebner were walking the tracks when the train, slowed by the temporary trestle, passed at about forty miles an hour. Beamer leaped assuming the stop at Blackinton, his head struck and brains were dashed out as witnesses near Williamstown heard a cry.
Beamer died after a hurried return to Williamstown for lanterns and aid. Medical Examiner Sabin investigated and ruled the death in accordance with the facts. Beamer's mother is listed as living in Stockoridge.
Rev. William M. Trumbower, 23, a Syracuse Seminary student and West Hoboken Methodist pastor, is jailed after a reported elopement plot with Mrs. Bob, the landlady’s wife. The Newark conference faces charges of unchristian conduct as a pistol threat, a violent pursuit, and a stormy confrontation with Mrs. Bob’s husband.
The Sun reports a Albany bill that would end electors chosen by legislature and instead divide by congressional districts. Each ticket would carry three electors, two statewide and one per district, likely routing most votes to the Republican nominee. Ex-Speaker Alvord opposed the change. Washington reportedly knew of the bill and aimed for passage.

Willaington Delaware January 17 Richard G Alexander a leading citizen died last night of hydrophobia contracted when bitten by a strange dog forty six years ago. He began showing symptoms Tuesday and on Thursday while in Washington suffered spasms, requiring six strong men to hold him in bed to prevent harm.
In a Chicago bagnio an affray left Lotta Robinson dead after a quarrel with George W. Stratton who fled, was captured, and confessed. James Fanning was wounded in the arm as he attacked Stratton, who claimed Robinson struck him with a pitcher before the first shot.
A small frame stable in Chatham Ontario burned this afternoon, believed caused by children playing with matches. A boy aged four and a girl aged six, children of A J Wilson, were burned to death in the building.
A letter from Fayal reports United States Consul Dabney and his aged father rescued four drowning sailors from a French barque’s crew at great personal risk. Five sailors were saved from a crew of a dozen, with peril described as imminent.
In Columbus on January 14 Mr. Garfield was elected United States senator to succeed Thurman. Garfield won 66 to 44 in the assembly and 20 to 13 in the senate, with Thurman securing the Democratic support.
Reports by steamer from the lower Rappahannock confirm the killing of two Lancaster county non resident dredgers. Since then hostilities of the oystermen have ceased.
In Blair county Pennsylvania Republicans elected delegates to the state convention at Altoona on Saturday. A resolution to instruct the delegates to vote for James G. Blaine for president was defeated by a vote of unknown.
A St Thomas special reports a devastating storm on the island of St Kitts in which 200 people die and property valued at 250000 is destroyed. The flood swamps baseterre with landslides, sugar grounds ruined, and much of the population left homeless as authorities mount relief efforts.
Portland reports show property losses around 75000 with churches, courthouses, and theaters wrecked amid high winds. Killed and injured include Helprich, O'Donnell hurt, and others frozen near a penng station. Railways, telegraph lines, and roads suffer major disruption across Oregon and Washington with multiple towns hit.
Wilfred Streeter of Mollyook Vermont was severely injured last night when his nephew John Cellison allegedly attacked him at his home over rumors about Streeter circulating slander about Cellison’s wife. Streeter suffered serious facial and head wounds as Cellison fled. a warrant is outstanding and the district attorney will handle the case.
Fire damp from wet coal in the Greece's hold exploded as stevedores were unloading freight. George Welsh and Patrick Dunn were killed instantly, nine others injured but not believed to die. The lamp carried by a worker ignited the damp gas. the fire was put out with little vessel damage.
In Detroit on January 19 a report says M. Rouse reached Little Traverse and recounted the loss of Charles Odell his wife and two children who began a Beaver Island voyage for Little Traverse on the 13th. The family was swept between two ice floes near Wanghosance Light Lake Michigan. Rouse was separated from them and believes they perished.
A Leadville despatch reports Colonel D. P. Dyer of St. Louis leading a group of western capitalists who pursued mining property in Leadville Colorado on Saturday. The chase targeted Glass, Rough and Ready No 2, and Foam giveaways with a claimed value of 5000 dollars. The deal centers on an aoe sale of mining property Sarpede in Leadvill.
A Washington dispatch says the President plans to appoint H. Murray of Louisville Kentucky as governor of Utah and intends to send the renomination to the Senate. John Emery's friends will seek a Senate postponement for twenty four hours.
Cravornwall on January 19 records the death of Mrs Margaret Tamy a figure in a widely discussed case. She reportedly survived for years with minimal nourishment refusing all sustenance despite offers. Her life stirred public interest before the end.
