At William Porter's grist mill in New Hope Mercer county West Virginia a boiler exploded while farmers gathered for flour on Saturday. Joseph E French Thomas Carter Levi Shields and John Wimmer were instantly killed Eli Shields died later Wade Shuffelbarger exposed flesh and bones and Jerome Carter William Carter were seriously injured The blast blamed on the engineer letting boiler water run low.

Herena Mont Jan 4 The records of Montana dividend paying mines show total disbursements for 1888 exceeding 3.3 million dollars. This amount accounts for over a quarter of all dividends paid by United States and Mexican mines in the year. Granite Mountain Company at Phillipshoro led with 1.8 million, Dram Summon Helena over 500 thousand, Boston and Montana about 400 thousand. Total mineral output for the year valued between 35 and 40 million, up about 10 million from 1887.
