A Celebrated Case of Murder in Antwerp 1882
In January 1882 Antwerp awoke to the disappearance of lawyer William Bernays. A letter from Basle claimed Bernays was accidentally killed by Henry Vaughan in Brussels over a proposed steamship venture. Investigation traced Leon and Armand Peltzer, brothers of German origin, to the crime. Leon confessed shooting Bernays in a fit of passion after a confrontation, later describing a plan to disguise the death. The trial in Brussels resulted in death sentences for both brothers, though commutation remains likely.
