Blaine Urges China Immigration Limits Aimed at White Labor
Senator Blaine writes to the New York Tribune defending the 1879 bill restricting Chinese immigration. He argues Chinese workers are under contract, unhealthy, and socially disruptive, fearing their arrival harms American labor and civilization. He cites pestilence, segregation, and failed assimilation to justify excluding Chinese entrants and warns of potential Pacific slope unrest if limits are not enforced.
