Inventor offers safer switch for Taunton railroad

Mr Henry N Hopkins of the Boston Clinton Fitchburg and New Bedford Railroad in Taunton has devised a self acting safety switch and frame. The device uses moving switch rails a guard rail and a pointed rail fixed to the frame to lock and ring the signal as a train passes. It operates the same regardless of train direction and prevents derailment with no riding of rails. One unit is on the main track opposite the Taunton depot and a freight train passed safely with the switch set wrong. Engineers hail it as the best and cheapest switch yet.
