A prominent lawyer and politician he served in the Common Council Massachusetts House and as speaker 1868 69 70. In 1875 Grant appointed him judge on the Alabama Claims Commission. He leaves a widow aged 82 a sister and four brothers and a sizable fortune with a cultured library and fondness for literature and languages.
Colonel John W. Forney died at his residence in Patrapernia at 3 20 Thursday morning from Brights disease aggravated by a cold. He was 64. Hon Samuel J Randall helped in his last hours. Funeral Monday at West Laurel Hill cemetery. Forney, born September 30 1817 in Lancaster, rose from printer to editor of the Pennsylvanian, clerk of the House, editor of the Philadelphia Press, and later secretary of the Senate. He authored several volumes and led a shifting political path from Democrat to Republican then back to Democrats, supporting Hancock in recent campaigns.
Raymond P. Dennis aged 62 was killed in Fay River near his home after confronting three youths who had begun breaking his windows. Dennis retrieved a gun to drive them off, the youths seized the weapon and shot him, the incident witnessed by his family.

In Nashville a senator from Fentress county called John J. Vertress a liar during a Senate address over bribery accusations tied to a state debt settlement. Vertress then entered the Maxwell House, fired three times, wounding Smith in the left shoulder. Vertress was arrested and posted $10,000 bond.

Twelve hundred Pullman Car Works employees strike against Illinois Central near Carcaco Illinois, citing overcrowded cars and demand for added commuter seats. They refuse to surrender tickets, claim tickets entitle both carriage and seat, and block tracks last night until their demands are met.
Jefferson Davis, with wife and daughter, arrived at Hoboken aboard the steamship Neckar of the Bremen line. He appeared wearied but improved since leaving Europe, said he would not share opinions with reporters, and planned to depart for Louisville for quiet life. Yesterday at Wasumetos court Guiteau faced rebuttal testimony and hostile crowds. The condemned man was escorted in a van with jeers from colored crowds and schoolboys while old women shook fists nearby. He is shot by Jones and does not ride at the front. Cries fade in afternoon but persist near the entrance.
