Officers Payne Powers and Mahoney of Station 3 arrested a man named Kearns at 31 Billerica Street for drunkenness on a Saturday afternoon. They discovered his five year old daughter Rosa unconscious from liquor and took her to Massachusetts General Hospital. The mother is serving a term on the island and the father faces likely confinement on Monday. Care will be provided for the child.

In Chelsea Vermont on August 28 James Robinson a pauper aged 73 at the Thetford town farm is alleged to have assaulted an elderly woman there. The victim died from heart trouble attributed to the assault. Robinson was arrested and placed in jail.
In Georgia on August 26 Leonard Coker a Black man was hanged by a man about forty miles from Montgomery along the Western railroad for the assault and slaying of a white woman named Catherine Weet. Local reporting confirms his guilt and execution details.
Dr. Bliss submits to Congress a bill against James A. Garfield estate for professional services during his last illness. He details years of care, consultations with Drs. Hamilton Acton Woodward and others, personal exertion, sacrifices, weight loss, sepsis, and travel expenses. A Hong Kong telegram reports four thousand natives dying of cholera in a Philippine province with Europeans largely spared. In Rochester New York General Charles J Powers a prominent lawyer died, born 1823 in Canada, educated at Toronto, who served in the Union Army and rose to major general of volunteers.
On August 28 Burrago reports a blast that sparked a fire at the Erie elevator. Explosion of compressed dust, ignited by gas, caused an estimated 410000 in building losses and 175000 in grain. Eight men are missing, believed burned. Engineer Bon pene body found burned.
