The issue appears due to office carelessness rather than clear fraud, with blame likely falling on authorities or the police, not the pension agent Ada C. Sweet, whose resignation was noted.
Rev Alonzo G Shears M D a 75 year old former St Luke's rector married Muss May Palmer of New York age about 25. A South End woman hosts her paralytic mother who insists on sleeping downstairs. A storm rages as a prowler is spotted on the piazza. The mother unexpectedly moves upstairs to safety with the daughter and husband alarmed. The intruder is not pursued as a wagon of fifteen gypsies shelter on the piazza.
The Democratic State Convention in Crook Rapids Iowa elected J H Keatly as Council Bluffs chairman. Fusion candidates Whiting Brannon and the Greenbacks were nominated. A Greenback acceptance tied to the Democratic platform was required. Ninety nine counties represented by 65 delegates. no absentees. Judge Waitinz, 60, a New York native who moved to Iowa in 1853, is described as a total abstinence man.
Gossips report the Lowville New York ceremony last week uniting Henry Burt aged 74 and Cora Porter of Amherst. The groom is a longtime resident and widow, with the bride described as a widow with a short marriage history, the wedding noted amid town chatter.
The passage outlines a man of notable fortune estimated between $10,000 and $70,000, a leading member of the First Congregational Church, and a representative in the General Court. The session closed with long applause for the rhetoric.
Buffalo August 18 One of the most difficult surgical operations known to the profession was performed at General Hospital by Dr Rosewell Park. The larynx was removed to destroy a cancer. The patient Dr J H Pierce of Phillipsburg, Canter county, Penn, who contracted the disease in 1862. A tracheotomy was performed and silver tubes inserted to replace the larynx with reeds forthcoming. Recovery is rapid and the outcome is uncertain. This operation has been done only twice before, in New York and St Louis. The New York patient survived. the St Louis patient died.
In Ruppany New York on August 22 at Mrs. Thomas Wood's residence an infant died. While the undertaker prepared the body a witness claimed a cross and chalice appeared on the white cloth covering the face. The crowd gathered, police were needed, cloth stayed marked as it wetted, then the shadow vanished after about noon. Many called it a miracle.
Granny Ann Hogan, an old colored woman, died Saturday at 7 a m on the Alex Cook plantation near Bovina in this county at an alleged age of 120. Her hair is described as three feet long, gray and black, a portion of which was sent to the exposition last spring. She was born in Tennessee and had taken little nourishment for the last month.
El Paso August 20 The Mormon colonists at Corral Litas Mex claim to have found ancient silver mines once worked nearly a century ago. They estimate about 5 million dollars in silver value. Utah Mormon miners say the find is very rich and promising.

Andrew Trowt, Wenham postmaster about 40, led to the altar Lauretta Moulton, a resident of the town. On Monday the 10th, he contracted, but left, and has not returned. It is thought a temporary aberration caused the elopement, with prior engagement broken for a match with Riley. Trent remains in charge of the office and its accounts.
Lawrence dispatch reports a U S senator says President Cleveland plans to send a bureau officer to Indian Territory to gather a delegation of tribes, secure a settlement, and declare the lands open to settlement. This plan would bypass a commission and save months.
From the Bangor Commercial comes word of the death of Old $1, a noted Aroostook county guide and trapper for over forty years. He reportedly died from a back injury after a fall that occurred while tying. The tall figure stood six feet nine inches and weighed twenty five pounds.
The New York Sun recounts a voyage south from Valparaiso through Smythe Channel toward the Straits of Magellan. It describes the forbidden icebound coast, numerous uncharted islands rich in minerals, and a perilous gale that drove the ship off course for sixty hours as Cape Pillar neared.
A series of trials between the New York sloop Priscilla and the Boston yacht Puritan drew great interest as they vied to be chosen to race the English yacht Genesta. In brisk Sandy Hook conditions the Puritan led early on the 20 mile course, with Priscilla closing, and after multiple races the Puritan claimed the best overall showing and was favored to next race Genesta.
Dr E H Graham Dewey recalls Maxwell in Boston asking for a corpse to aid his case. He suggested hiring a body from a Medical School but Maxwell insisted he had obtained one. Dewey doubts the motive, suspects dissection, and worries about insurance implications as Maxwell moves west.

A dispute over a beach land at the Cove, terminus of Achusnet street railroad, pits A P Smith of the railway against Felix Cavanaugh who pitched a tent and improved the beach. The city claimed the area as an open way for years. After thirteen days of record searches the city land surveyor identified true owners but will not reveal who they are. The title covers the entire beach and could lead to large sand-claim liabilities against the city.
The house passed resolutions urging State representatives to press for laws restricting public land sales to American citizens or those intending to become citizens. It calls for sales only to individuals in moderate quantities and reserves unsold agricultural lands for homesteads by actual settlers.
W A Shaw, a Philadelphia stenographer, identified Hugh Brooks as the Maxwell suspect from Maxwel l papers and cuts. Brooks, once of Hyde Leicester Eny, was seen by Shaw in August 1884. he then lived as a solicitor, enjoyed science, while eccentricities and forged promissory notes marked his past, later moving to Dublin.
Savannah dispatch reports the steamship Beaufort sunk in a hurricane near Bermuda on August 8 with all hands lost. The dredge Beaufort, valued at 150000 dollars, formerly cleared Savannah July 20 for Greenock in ballast and was one of the largest dredges. Captain Renny, a Nova Scotian, commanded.
Victor Repose and his wife, very poor and proud, brought their dying young daughter to the poor director's office in Erie on a Saturday seeking food and medicine. As they prepared to plead their case, the child died waiting for attention, the parents having hidden their suffering from neighbors.
