Uncle Charley Johnson of Washington Dies After Vast Bulk
Charles Johnson, born a slave in Carroll County Maryland in 1809, died after a life marked by extraordinary size. Emancipated before the war he built a cobbler’s bench on Third and K in Washington and supported a large family with courtly manners. Funeral arrangements faced difficulty due to his nearly 400 pound frame and oversized casket. He attended St. Aloysius Church and was known for gentleness, ill with gin, yet temperate in habit.
