New York July 25. Levi P Morton faces accusations of importing foreign labor under contract. Reporters detail two gardeners, John Boyd and Laichton Forbes, brought from England to Rhinebeck for two-year terms with low wages and poor living conditions. Morton denies making statements on the matter.
Representative Whiting of Michigan returned from Columbus where he and a committee urged former Senator Thurman to address the Michigan State Convention at Port Huron on August 15. Thurman’s reception in Columbus was described as cordial and promising for the campaign.
Portiano July 26 A Maine Democratic State committee meeting expresses optimism for an aggressive campaign. William Emery earns united support in the first district while plans include Bangor rally August 1 and Alfred meeting August 2 with Emery presiding. Bradbury Clifford and Putnam slated for speeches in several states and Maine. Sanford rally August 4 with Mc Gillicuddy and Eliot King expected to speak.

July 24 Oshkosh labor convention passes a resolution demanding open loyalty pledges from all candidates. Leaders say they will issue a full ticket and invite Democratic endorsement only if Democrats accept no direct nomination. Late night, Secretary Wright offered nearly all concessions to join without nominating. Dr. William Powell of Lacrosse, known as White Beaver, was nominated for governor after hours of wrangling.
In Stevens county near Pony Creek a clash between Hugoton and Woodsdale men left seven dead. Sam Robinson city marshal of Hugoton and M Cook went with wives to Dudley ranch to buy cattle. After a dinner, armed Woodsdale party demanded Robinson surrender. Robinson and Cook fled. first skirmish wounded four Woodsdale men. A subsequent engagement killed John Cross sheriff of Stevens county and three more Woodsdale men, with others wounded. The county is described as at war and Robinson is missing.
A Kansas family of Daniel McCarty including his wife four daughters and a daughter in law were poisoned after drinking buttermilk. They sent for a neighbor and all fell violently ill. Five doctors work to save Mrs McCarty and three daughters. The old man Mrs Henshaw and one daughter expected to die. milk likely stood in a copper vessel.
A heavy load of rifle ball cartridges exploded on Bridgeport Steamboat Wharf as John Mc Donald, a Union Metallic Cartridge Company teamster, unloaded a box. The blast knocked him, cartridges flew everywhere, some through the roof, but no one else was injured and the cause remains unknown.
A Tribune dispatch reports J Milton Turner and allies backing mugwumpery were denounced and outvoted by the straightout Democrats at the national convention independent colored voters committee meeting in Indianapolis. Charles H Taylor of Kansas City led the Democratic wing with J Gordon Street opposing Turner and George Fisher representing the independents. The Democratic faction secured control and planned to organize as a Democratic negro delegation excluding Turner and his followers.
A small zinc covered board on copper tacks with a leather loop serves as a heat and soot resistant rack for tea kettles and steamers beside the stove. It cleans easily with kerosene or Bristol brick and keeps fingers clean. The ad also promotes Dr. Pierce's Pellets and Admiross Granules as vegetable remedies for constipation and bilious head ache.

Reports from Garven City Missouri on July 30 describe a raid near Lafayette Stevens county three miles south of Voorhees with Herbert Toney the escapee shot, surrounded in a dugout by 76 Hugoton men. New York July 26 Coroner Eidman investigates the death of Thomas Dunigan of 188 East Sixty fourth street who died at Presbyterian Hospital from hemorrhage after a tooth removal. Blood flowed profusely, efforts failed, ambulance transported him to hospital where he died. The dentist's name was not given and will be examined to determine negligence or bungling.
Jouxstows Neb July 30 John Anderson says he was trapped in a two by two box beneath a well for nine days with sand closing in. He drank about a dozen water drops from rain, breathed stale air, and heard rescuers above planning to pull him out. A wet rag and bread revived him as the box was finally raised.
Four Ohio and Mississippi railroad workers, Conductor Lester and three brakemen, were poisoned at breakfast in West Cairo, allegedly by a drug mixed with coffee. They were hospitalized in critical condition and doctors fear for their lives.
Four thousand Comanches Kiowas Cheyenne Arapahoes and Delawares at the Anglarke agency sought to shoot at the moon during a total eclipse. The principal chief ordered fire at the air, and the group opened shooting for over an hour until ammunition ran out. On reappearance after the eclipse, they cried out in triumph, believing they had defeated the evil omen.
Mormon elders Franklin Murray and Jones Fallon, driven from Muhlenburg Kentucky, were captured by White Caps at Mrs Thomas residence in far northern Evans County Indiana. Two women Clara and Maggie Lyng were found there. Pitching in the woods, Murray Fallon and one woman received 100 lashes before fainting. White Caps warn to hang the missionaries if they do not depart immediately.
Roderick Lowry, nephew of Governor Lowry, forced entry into Mayor Henry's residence where his wife sought protection. He choked her, bit her, struck with a water pitcher, and beat her severely, leaving her for dead before fleeing to the swamps.

A tornado tore through Fairmount Illinois yesterday afternoon carving a 200 yard wide path to the northwest. It demolished fences and orchards but caused no reported loss of life.
