A massive April cyclone devastates St Cloud Sauk Rapids and nearby towns in Minnesota. Reports describe hundreds killed and more than 150 injured as homes, freight yards, and the Manitoba freight depot are wrecked. Rescue efforts surge from Brainerd Minneapolis and Saint Paul with surgeons and relief supplies.
Reports from Minnesota Iowa and Texas describe widespread cyclone damage. In Sauk Rapids and St Cloud many killed and injured, with hundreds displaced and extensive property destruction. Aid flows in as debris cleared and rebuilding plans start while threats of looting prompt calls for patrols.
The narrative describes a venomous snake found near a person who pulled it free. The creature’s body attached to a limb as the extremity penetrated, and during extraction the vessel was torn. The young man bled to death as a result of the broken vessel.
James C. Anderson an English art decorator and his second wife Mrs Sutherland face divorce history as Anderson allegedly left Newport with Rachel Spooner, a Newport family member. The couple reportedly fled Tuesday night for New York by Fall River line, with Spooner’s family alarmed and bank funds drawn. A letter claimed marriage and trunks sent to Chicago. Earlier, Anderson’s divorce from his first wife followed accusations of brutality and desertion.
The civil war milestone marked by a Cambridge celebration for the departure of three months' men from Massachusetts. Judge Richardson of Texas attended as a former company captain. Veterans and guests enjoyed the event. In Lowell, the Sixth Massachusetts Regiment’s Baltimore entry on April 19, 1861 was reimagined with tales of its origin and roster by Majors Sampson and Follansbee, with a memorial service at the monument for Ladd and Whitney and speeches by city mayors and dignitaries from Middlesex Suffolk and Essex counties.
Charles Perry, a colored barber from St. Cloud, sprang into action when Sauk Rapids disasters struck. He bought plaster and salve, gathered linen, and spent five hours treating over twenty injured before doctors arrived, washing wounds and closing them with plaster. His spontaneous courage made him the Sauk Rapids hero.
Twenty three victims were buried today in St Cloud Minnesota from the recent disaster. Fifteen were laid to rest at the cathedral four at the Church of the Immaculate Conception and four at the Baptist Church. A requiem drew about 2500 people. Three more deaths raised the toll to twenty two. Property damage tops sixty five thousand dollars with ten thousand from outside cities raised for sufferers. Herbert B. Preston, a Neb. private banker from Wayne, 10,000 dollars capital, issued fake mortgage notes through Boston and New York agencies. He grossed about 16,000 dollars from fraudulent loans, then vanished. Pursued by Deputy Sheriff Don Lesher, Preston confessed and agreed to return to Nebraska with officers, departing via Detroit and Chicago.
The schooner Charles H Morse of Bath 5365 tons is believed to have sunk the steamer Oregon after departing Baltimore with coal destined for Boston. Nine crew aboard Morse, five named: A. E. Manson Jr. A P Wildes Ed McMahan Mr. Holland and Mr. Blaisdell. The Morse carried Maine crew and claimed top safety equipment.
An eighteen foot boiler weighing 4900 pounds exploded at J A Church sash and blind factory on Flat street. Brick boiler house demolished bricks hurled through the factory side. Boiler flew 30 feet and landed 260 feet away in R A Browns barn killing a horse. Damage estimated at 3000 dollars. Cause unknown. Nearby roots and windows damaged. Two workers narrowly spared.
At Hartworp on April 18 Michael McCourt 28 and Michael Melia a fireman and night porter at the Allyn House with Mrs Nellie Healy a chamber maid went rowing on the Connecticut river. Their boat drifted toward a barge then swung into the current and capsized. Melia grasped the rudder chain and was saved, but McCourt and Healy were swept downstream and their bodies not recovered.
Provincetown reports the whaling steamer A. B. Nickerson killed and towed in a massive finback whale measuring over seventy feet. The catch is the largest finback ever captured in Massachusetts Bay and will be bailed out by the Nickerson Oil Company at their new Herrin Cove factory. The plant is equipped to boil out whales and blackfish and to manufacture fertilizers from whale car carcasses and fish, operating in conjunction with the steamer A. B. Nickerson.
An army officer reports that ten days ago Moneno Garcia and Matico Bravo led about 100 desperadoes from the border into Progreso and Juarez, freeing prisoners and mounting a cattle theft and bootlegging raid. The band has about 2500 head cattle and is now in the mountains after fights that killed two officers.
Portstown April 17 report by the investigative committee finds the male department lacking clean beds and discipline. It notes eleven male insane patients and calls the building used for the insane department wholly unsuitable, while rumors of removals haunt the almshouse staff.
Edward Huffnagle reports his cat turned violent biting his throat and face before striking his sister Mrs Rhoades. John Nissler intervened, shot the animal as it attacked him. hydrophobia feared.
A Grand Falls youth named Ferguson suffered a six month wasting illness with a choking sensation. He reportedly expelled a snake from his mouth and collapsed, prompting a frantic scene as family members tried to aid him and understand the bizarre development.
April 12 notice from Havequity reports George W. Doe, driver for Carter & Co. express, tried to cross a city track as a noon train from the East entered. The train struck the heavy drag, demolishing it and propelling Doe twenty feet into the street, but he suffered no serious injuries. No fault was found with the railroad.
CoLtumpus April 16 The House voted 1 to 33 party lines to send the Payne investigation testimony and majority report to the Senate for action. Democrats urged the inclusion of the minority report, but Republicans blocked the bid.
The Senate debates open executive sessions as a major issue while handling the Indian appropriation bill and fisheries questions. In the House, Hurd Romers election contested seat dominates discussions before pushing through river and harbor and pension measures as week ends.
President Cleveland writes Senator Jackson urging him to accept nominating to the vacant judgeship after Judge Baxter's death. He contends the scramble for the seat is unseemly and that Cleveland will make the nomination himself despite Jackson's reluctance. Cleveland asserts the choice rests on duty and conviction, not persuasion.
Cincinnati April 18 C P Huntington will construct a double iron and steel bridge across the Ohio River linking Cincinnati with Covington. The structure will rest on five piers, stand three feet higher than the 1882 high water mark, and cost about 3 million dollars.
Walshington April 14 In the thirteen months since Secretary Manning took charge of the treasury 167 offices with salaries totaling 232 600 per annum have been vacated and will not be filled.
