Reducing Bone to a Fertilizer

A detailed discussion on bone as fertilizer. Raw bones contain about 50 percent phosphate of lime and nitrogen in organic matter. fat has no agricultural value and hinders decomposition. Burning increases phosphate content but reduces usefulness unless acids dissolve bone-black. Boiling removes fat but preserves value. bone glue removes nitrogen. Grinding coarse bone lasts longer but coarse pieces are less readily used by roots. fine grinding aids immediate effect. Methods to reduce bone include layered bone and unleached wood ashes, or acid treatment, though acid handling is slow and cask-safe.
